Herb, I Wrote an article about the Telescopic Apartment in the Vintage Ford which used to belong to David Woodworth. I took photo's and David gave me printed information on it including the patent papers. If you do not have these let me know and I will get to you.

I think the Telescopic Apartment is one of the most practical extra's you can have as its easy to fit and remove from a roadster. Would make a really cosy sleeping device especially with two girls and a guy in it as one of the publicity photo's shows.

Here are some pics of a T with trailer camper at a Tampa RV show about 8 years ago.

And that same 1915 with slid out that used to be David Woodworth's, that's David in the pics too. This '15 is now in that museum.

Nice pictures Dan,
If anyone looked at the video clip the guy mentions that the water for the shower is heated by the engine cooling system, like a lot of museums they got it wrong, here is a picture and notes from the original sales brochure.

The water was heated by the exhaust through a heat exchanger.

There is a write up on this camper in the May 1916 Popular Mechanics. A Google search for May 1916 Popular Mechanics should take you to the article.

Update - Here's what my reproduction Telescoping Apartment looks like today. For the first time we moved the cabin to the back of the T and took it for a drive. I still have to finish the cabinets on the inside that slide out.Telscoping Apartment Camper

Herb,

Beautiful work! It would be fun to go camping with. And I could probably put one like that on my cut off also.

Respectfully submitted,

It is difficult to keep a slide out on a modern camper from leaking in a hard rain. What keeps that from leaking?

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By Herb Spies - Ft. Walton Bch,FL on Tuesday, September 04, 2012 - 06:02 pm:

The one in the RV museum that was built by Gustav De Bretteville of San Francisco has no weatherstripping at the joints. I figured it was like the song says " it never rains in California". This is the one in the pictures earlier in this thread.

Mine will have weatherstripping but I haven't gotten it wet yet while it was all unfolded. It didn't leak when I washed when it was folded up.

I have been thinking that a small awning over each of the two side slides might work.

In the first two pictures posted by Dan Trace, anyone know where the spark plug wires are going?

Herb -- When it rains, just pitch a tent over it. Problem solved! :-)

Herb,
Are you bringing it to the show Sat? I'd sure like to see it. Among the vettes, mustangs, & camaros, the people seem to really enjoy seeing our old stuff! I'll be there with my 15.

Mike,

I plan to take it to the Northwest Florida Model A&T show at the Mullet Festival site in Niceville,Fl on Saturday. That will be the first showing of the camper.
