Model T Ford Forum: Forum 2012: Does Anyone Have An Original Warford Repair Manual?

Hi Everyone!

I have some questions about the original Warford Auxiliary Transmission in my 1912 Model T.

I've never used the Warford except engaging it in my driveway when it wasn't running. I took the top off and it doesn't seem like it is engaging every gear correctly?

I was wondering if anyone has or knows where I can get an Original Warford repair manual and/or has any words of advice for me?

I'm in the process of making some final repairs before I bring it to the Fabulous Fords Car Show at Knotts Berry Farm on April 22nd.

Thanks so much!
Steve

I strongly doubt that there ever was a "repair" manual for a Warford transmission. We are familiar with the comprehensive repair manual for the Model T but that was not typical of the times. Most auto and component(transmission, axle, engine) makers expected competent journeyman mechanics to use standard practices and common sense. I am aware that "common sense" sometimes seems to be a very high standard! Remember that it did not take any special tools to work on one of these.

Wondering how to take those triangle covers off that hold the counter shaft. I removed bolts but it was held on. Since it was not broke I won't go further and just seal it up better to keep from leaking so much and put a vent in it.

One of Jim Cullinane's Speedster books covers rebuilding the Warford in detail. Howard Gengrich wrote the article and included all the part numbers for the bearings. It's well worth buying the book, for this one article alone....

Those triangular covers are the bearing holders and they extend into machined holes in the case. As the clearance is a slip fit the old sticky and even dried up grease probably almost glued them in place. Will take some prying to get them loose. They have shims under them against the case that are used to adjust the bearings.
As for venting, the shift lever on top has no real seal so it provides an effective vent.

John, Layden, thanks for info. I was wondering why folks were talking about it needing a vent when it appeared there was a hole for the shift lever. Must have been a later unit they were referring to. Funny, I thought it was a TT part, but could not find any mention in Ford books. Finally cleaned off the gunk and then searched on the name...

The transmission is in a 26-7 TT and has a beefy crossmember which as I understand it may not be a great idea on some Ts as they need to have some flex. I had read that the 26-7 was not going to have the same issues as the hogshead was more ridgid.

John M, do you know if any of Jim & Howard's books has any info about the Jumbo Giant trans?

Rodger, They only cover the Warford and, of course, the Ford planetary. Really though, the whole set is worth buying. They are great reading and a wealth of good info. If you are building a speedster they are the single best source of information out there. The other thing is that, now that Jim is gone, the books may not be around that much longer....

Does the Warford throw a lot of oil out the top? The thing was covered in layers of wet and somewhat dried grease/grime. perhaps a rag stuffed in the hole...have yet to drive the TT yet, but got it running BTW. Just removed and resealed the case covers, cleaned and put new 80/120 in it.
