After I charge my mag on it's engine stand, how do I check to see if it is good to go.I'm guessing I'll need a meter of some sort.

I think most just start up the engine and measure the mag voltage or see how it runs no the mag.

Here is one thread about checking magnet strength:

Yesterday, I went to help a friend and club member charge his Magnets, in the engine. He had told me earlier over the phone that he measured ZERO output with the engine running on Battery. Earlier last week, I had asked if he was using a digital meter and he said, "no, it had a dial." I told him he had to use an analog meter with a dial and a scale. I took my trusty old Simpson 260 and my new Mag meter tester to compare readings. He had 12 volts at idle with the 1156 bulb for a load. Then I told him to try his meter again and when he got it out, I told him to forget the test, as his meter was a digital.

My test set.

Nice!

I want to copy your meter testing unit, already had a spare Frank Fenton meter, and a plate, just not sure how to wire the 1156 lamp for load, can you post a simple wiring diagram?

Thanks

Here is a diagram from:

Just need to carry a supply of 1156 bulbs because it is likely that the bulb will blow if the mag is good.

Here is another description of the test:

There should be resistor to use in place of the bulb but I don't know what size right off.

It's just parallel wiring Dan. Run one of the wires from your light socket to the Magneto meter. Run the other light socket wire to the remaining Magneto meter terminal. Then make up a couple of wires with alligator clips and put one on each Magneto meter terminal. It's the same as the above pictorial drawing .... just substitute the digital meter in the drawing for your Magneto meter.

Hello everyone,

Can you guys please give a bit more info on an "1156" lamp ? We don't seem to commonly have such indent numbers on lamps here in NZ. I think I asked the question to Ron Patterson a few years ago but I can't remember the answer...

Wattage and voltage would be good, or where the lamp would go in a modern vehicle, ie: brake, tail light etc for a clue. I suspect an 1156 would be something like a 12V, 21W or something ?

Regards,
Bede

Hi Bede,

Hows things?

Yes a 1156 in NZ is the typical indicator bulb here. 12v, 21w I picked up a socket and set of bulbs from Butlers in town.

Hope this helps

Cheers Simon

There is a GE Lamp Catalog on the Internet at http://www.gelighting.com/na/business_lighting/education_resources/literature_li brary/catalogs/downloads/msb_catalog.pdf

That catalog will answer many questions.

Hi Si,

thought so. There must have been 21W sitting in the back of the mind under the cobwebs. New house ?

Hi Jim,

hope all is well.
