When did you, (USA) stop calling gasoline? 'Petrol'
We still do and gas is gas, for the BBQ etc.
Gasoline was the common term in the U.S.
I doubt if the word "petrol" was ever really used by a majority of the U.S. public to refer to gasoline in the early days of motoring.
In the photo, "Petrol" is the brand of gasoline. The word is not being used in the generic sense as a synonym for gasoline.
We (US) stopped calling them service stations also, there now just gas stops or quick stops.
They carry more fast foods and give NO service.

And to settle your nerves, here in Calif you can buy a nice cold beer and they will supply a paper bag to "hide" it in as you continue your drive.

Guessing from the sign by Vermont Avenue and the Lion Head sign on the roof, Petrol must be a Gilmore brand. That was a very prominent west coast company. We used to go to Hollywood Stars games at Gilmore Field.
This is a good example of a filling station, which was the common term before they became service stations.
In the fifties there was a brand of gasoline in Germany that was "Gasoline". Maybe it was just Gasolin, I don't remember.
Aaron, the German word for gasoline is Benzin.

The man on the right looks like my dad. He grew up in Los Angeles. He went to U.S.C. But I don't think U.S.C. is that far south on Vermont.
