Model T Ford Forum: Forum 2012: OT - Converting "old" tire size to metric?

Does anyone know what the metric equivalent of a 3" X 4" tire is (clincher)? Seems no one is making 34X4 clincher tires anymore, but I was told there is a metric version that is 2/10th of an inch larger (wheel diameter) than the 34X4.

Thanks for any help,

Rob

Amazing what you can find with Google search;

John,

I tried that, but it still requires a "modern" measurement to convert. It doesn't work for a 30x3.5 or 34x4 measurement.

875 x 105 metric (in mm)

= 34.45 x 4.33 inches

Used on 26.55 inch rim.

They are expensive. When searching spell it tyre not tire.

Try here, picking the 450x21 tire from the drop down tire size box - then click GO:

So a 30 x 3.5 in tire is 762 x 89 mm?

Thanks,

Rob

If this is correct, Coker has a tire (Excelsior) that is 875mm by 105mm, resulting in a 26.2 rim size ( our K has 26 in rim). They also say BE for beaded edge. Does this mean clincher bead?

Thanks for any help,

Rob

Just yesterday I was looking at an early brass cadillac that requires 25" clincher tires. A previous owner couldn't find them and used straight side tires instead. In order to do this they had filled the clincher opening with what looked like 1/2" dia. rope. I remember hearing of this fix years ago. The Caddi I saw is being restored still and not on the road yet so I can't say how successful the fix is. The tires on the car are new but they were installed over 20 years ago. Sounds like some of my restoration times...

Ken and Craig, thanks. I found this chart (link), looks like the 875 mm x 105mm might work.

Black tires are $490 and gray are $807! Ouch.

Just like that price is about triple a T clincher, gas will be about triple...

It is interesting that about a year or so ago, on another (UK) forum, a USA member was looking for metric tyres for a Veteran Rover. I looked at the metric size that he quoted, and thought that it looked just like 30 x 3.5 Beaded Edge, so suggested that he hunt for Model T tyres. He was very pleased, they fitted well and were a lot cheaper than the metric ones he could find.
