Can someone help me on how to test a generator? The ammeter on my 27T does not indicate that the generator is charging. When I toot the horn, the ammeter goes negative, so I assume that it is wired correctly. I have a digital multimeter. Can I use that to test the output of the generator?
Thanks
Bill

It depends if the ammeter EVER showed a charge when the generator was working. If it did your car is likely wired correctly. If not your assumption about being wired correctly may be wrong. Wiring problems in this area of the Model T charging circuit are very common.
Give me a call tomorrow 11am-4pm EST when I am in the shop and perhaps I can help. My first question will be about YOUR history with this car.

Thanks Ron
I have owned this car for probably 35 years. It has been in storage for the last 20 years. We got it out of storage a couple of years ago and got it running last year. I seem to recall that it used to charge. Twenty years ago my Dad was around to fix these issues. Today, he is not around and I need to figure things out myself. I will give you a call tomorrow afternoon. I live in Ithaca, NY
The generator is working, dirty commutator.
