There is a cable TV show called "SHIPPING WARS" featuring USHIP.COM. Shippers have a 10 minute time limit to bid on shipping items. Basically anyone with a pickup truck can be a shipper. One guy has a shiny Peterbilt and trailer, but I wouldn't call him a professional truck driver.

Dan,
I bought (on ebay) a 1925 Depot Hack out of Jacksonville FL this past January to be hauled to Virginia Beach, VA.

As part of the sellers ebay site, ebay already has an option to click (look for the word SHIPPING) with information about shipping by various companies. It appears to me that these companies have lists of independent haulers connected with them who have already put out a bid to haul your purchase.

I used a hauler sponsored by UShip and I was extremely pleased with the service. Their bid is somewhat determined by what method they use for hauling… vis open or closed trailer, open or closed truck… distance and if they can combined other stuff with your item on a route that is convenient to them.

Of course, like everything else, a lot depends on personalities.

An interesting place to see the information about SHIPPING is to view a Model T on ebay, http://motors.shop.ebay.com/Cars-Trucks-/6001/i.html?Model=Model%2520T&Make=Ford &_trkparms=65%253A-2%257C39%253A1&rt=nc&_dmpt=US_Cars_Trucks&_pcats=6010%2C6001% 2C6000&_sc=1&_sticky=1&_trksid=p4506.c0.m245&_sop=10&_sc=1

I used USHIP once to have a small garden tractor shipped from Nebraska to California. In the bid information requirements it was stated that the shipper was to complete shipment in thirty days and the tractor was to be delivered on a unit that would allow the tractor to be driven off since there would not be an unloading dock available. After repeated inquires to where the tractor was it arrived weeks late and on a flat bed without a ramp. I had to find someone with a backhoe to lift it off of the trailer.

Be specific with your requirements and good luck.
