WHEN I BOLT THE TWO REAR HOUSINGS TOGETHER WITH NO PAPER GASKET THE RING GEAR WILL NOT TURN.IF I BACK OFF ON THE BOLTS JUST A LITTLE IT WILL TURN.IS THE PAPER GASKET ALSO A SHIM FOR CLEARANCE?

The Ford manual and the MTFCA books constitute one of the best Model T investments you can make. They're the first T parts everybody should buy. They will save you a lot of grief, hassle, and expense.

You may need to face off some of the thickness on the bronze thrust washer on the right(non-ring gear)side. Assuming you are happy with the pinion mesh and other things, the general procedure is to bolt the two axle housings together, then measure the space between them. Now face that thickness off the thrust washer and use the paper gasket thickness (.002/.004)for internal clearance.

If the thin paper gasket makes the difference between binding and free, that may be all the clearance you need.

THANKS, I HAVE THE FORD SERVICE MANUAL.DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT THE MTFCA BOOKS.I WILL CHECK THIS OUT.
