Model T Ford Forum: Forum 2012: Clunking in engine- HELP Please

Just got the engine started after being out of the car for some gaskets and Drive bands. I removed the hogshead while out rather than the pan as I only wanted to check the transmission. I replaced the hogshead with the engine vertical and shimmed the the hogshead ( 1926 engine) to what I thought was true. Now when it revs or is not under load while moving I get a somewhat random clunking. ( Not the rear end as I did that last year. Is it possible I have misaligned the shaft in the Transmission to cause the crankshaft to wobble enough to clunk? Otherwise does anyone have any constructive suggestions?

Is the clunk only when the car is moving? What is the condition of your U-Joint?

The clunking is in the engine weather moving or stopped. It definately has something to do with the engine only

It does not sound like a rod because it is not an even sound however I was wondering about the clunk of a swinging crankshaft. I just don't have enough experience or wisdom to figure it out

I'll cast the first dumb question: Did it start making noise after the repairs or is this the first time you ran it?

This is the first time I have run the engine since repairs

Could it be the cam moving fore and aft ??

Thank you David I suppose that is a possibility. I will study up on that to see if there is a thrust bearing of some type. It is hard to tell where the sound is coming from however I feel I have sensed ( you can tell from that that I am not sure) more noise in the front near the generator- may be cam - worth a look, Thanks

" I replaced the hogshead with the engine vertical and shimmed the the hogshead ( 1926 engine) to what I thought was true."

Methinks you should revert to whatever shims, if any, that were in there prior to removing the hogshead. Then give it another trial run.

John,

Are we talking about a "rod knock" like clunk consistent with the RPMs of the motor...or an "every so often" single clunk that might make a sound randomly after so many revolutions?

Loose magnet on the flywheel maybe? Too much end play of the crank?

As David mentioned on the cam, could it be moving due to the cam bearing retainer bolts coming loose?

By chance did your gen gear come off,,, That happened to once. Found the pin on the bottom of the oil pan

John,

I had a similar clunk. What had happened is that a magnet keeper had been knocked off while changing bands and would go around every once in a while. Caused some racket.

While putting the hogshead back on, I unknowingly knocked off the magnet keeper. I heard it go around two times when I drove the car a couple of blocks but didn't know what it was until I took the hogshead off again and saw a keeper missing.

Fished it out of the pan with a wire and replaced the brass mag screw that screws into the flywheel. Not exactly a fun job but drove it another 1,000 miles before I had it rebuilt.

The original brass magnet screws seem to crystallize and the heads break off, in part or whole head. Then the keeper can fall off. Bumping the keepers is all it takes.

I would not even start it again until I was sure that has not happened.

Thank you all! This will give me more places to look for the noise.

John, Are you sure when you tipped the engine on it's nose some lost part didn't fall forward towards one of the rods? The reason I ask is that my 22 Ford did that once and I found a "lost" and beat up band nut sitting in the inspection pan. It made a random racket that sounded worse than the damage it actually caused.
