What are the differences between a 1913 engine and, for example, a 1918 engine? It would help to have some guidelines to use when looking at them without taking the engine apart. Thanks

John,
You can step through year by year to see the differences in the engine as well as other changes from year to year in the Encyclopedia on this site:

Most of 1913 model year had pipe thread freeze plugs and narrow nose crankcase with teacup style oil drain. Engine serial numbers 157,425 to 348,735 approximatively. Were you perhaps thinking of some decorative grinding on the "8" in the casting date on the 1918 engine :-)
