Check your pan on a pan Jig, by some one that knows how to use one.

I install mine with the engine vertical, tailshaft up. I have also removed and reinstalled the rear axle and when I do all the bolts are removed from the 4th main. So far so good.

Even if the pan is ok in the ball cap area, with out it being on a jig, just about always, the pan arms will be out, and when used like that, the arms will throw the ball cap area out, when the arms twist that area. Herm.

I brought the web site up, and it seems like it has a different word for every thing!

Question Michael, How do you check the two pan arms, and the front snout?? Herm.

How do these pan jigs work? Is it just bolting the pan down on a known flat surface that straightens them or is heat & hammer required?

A flat surface is only 1 point out of 5 that has to be checked. Each arm, the ball cap area, and the front snout. Bending a pan with out heat, just bends it some where else. As far as a Hammer, we only use a lead Hammer to set the pan over the locater pins, other wise a Hammer will do more harm, then good. Note: The Brass on the arms, was put on, some time in years past, not by us. Pan owner did not want the wish bone socket rebuilt. This was one of the worst pans I have ever done, was it Out!! Herm.

So what are the specs for straitening a pan? You mention that you have to check the flat mating surface, Each arm, the ball cap area, and the front snout.

How do you know where these should all be? I ask because this is something I need to do.

No. 1. The first thing is to take all the bolt holes just below the gasket surface, and melt the babbitt from the front seal,"if Cracked". Blast the area, and rebabbitt the seal holder.

No. 2. Align the pan arms with the holes in the Pan Jig. We do not align the side holes in the arms, as they are not ever used.

No. 3 Remove the hand crank bushing, and replace with with a new one. They have a 3/4 inch hole, and ream to size, if needed. Then check the alignment of the bushing with the alignment hole on the Jig.

No. 4. Check alignment of the ball cap area, and move, or adjust as necessary. Tap and check all holes, 3/8's X 24 thread.

No. 5. We braze all inside rivet heads so they won't leak oil to the out side.

Rebuild wish bone socket, if Owner wants.

Herm.

I was just reading about being extra careful no to use the wrong gaskets when assembling the Hogs Head as it will throw off the bolt holes. It said that this can make it hard to align the 4th main. I had never thought of this before but it makes sense now.
