I am working on a 1920 Detroit Electric. I picked up the new side window glass today in laminated safety glass It is not only curved but has about a 3/4" twist as well. I had 3 pieces of each made. I figure to use one piece for another project and then I will have one spare. They cost about $250.00 each piece.

Les,

I hope you don't need the spare :-)

Do you have pics of the car?

Rob

Les,

How do you go about getting a special piece of curved class made?

Thanks,

Ted

Yep me too. I figure if I have it I won't need it!!
Ted
two approaches;
1. IF you are fortunate enough to have a original piece then is is somewhat easy, even if it is only one side and you need both sides. The business I deal with (they are right here in Calgary) made the front corner windows for this car and I had only one original, no problem.
2. For these windows I did not have a original. So I made a cardboard cutout of the size / shape of the glass. The I made a wooden "buck" that provided the curve and in this case the twist as well.

They then make a metal mould (it is kind of a adjustable multi use thing) that the glass (each layer separately in this case) can "sag" into in a furnace. After all the pieces have been made then they are bonded together with the middle plastic layer. I waited about 6 weeks for them.
The whole order came to $1,500.00, not real cheap, but if you don't have them then what?? And if you used plastic it always looks like it. The big plus is these are laminated safety glass and I value my life. I know, I am the guy who solders used gas tanks with gas in them.
