I never really noticed this but yesterday I was looking at the rearend of my 24 coupe and noticed something. On the rearend there is an outer flange which is really the cast backing plate. This is what the brake shoes and associated hardware bolts to, On my coupe the hubs are on nice and tight, pulled up and cotter keyed as normal, but the outer rim of that (so called backing plate) is about 1/4 inch thick, and it is all the way exposed around the edge. Just seemed to me like the drum edge should actually ride around that a bit to keep out dirt and dust, but apparently not.- Right??? you can almost look closely at mine and just barely see the edge of a brake shoe. Same on both sides.

Typical. The taper of the axle shaft and the wheel hub set the distance of the wheel drum to the axle housing backing plate.

Worn hubs or axle tapers let that space lessen, and that can cause rubbing troubles with the emergency brake shoes.

Normal gaps

That's great Dan, they look just like your photos, so I'm happy. The top photo is exactly like mine on the drivers side. That Axle is a new one, and the Hub was a very good fit. I knew that if the drum got very close that something would rub, but I wanted to be sure, because I rebuilt the rear end a few years ago. Thanks again for your help!!
