I am installing a reground cam in an engine I am doing. It comes with the shim set. Ok, I don't really know where they go and how to set up. The one engine I have seen with a shim it was home made and was between the front bearing and the block.

I went out and looked at what we have. There are 2 steel washers and a bronze thrust washer. Because the cam is under cut on the heel without them it would allow the cam to mover forwarded and lock into the oil notch. The spacers go between the timing gear cover and the timing gear and ride on the cam nut keeping the cam locked in place.
The bronze thrust washer might need to fitted some. I am thinking that I will take it down till the cam can be just turned with the front cover on and NO gasket. Then when the gasket is put on should be enough oil clearance.
Mark -- I believe the instructions with the shim kit say to stack the shims until they are flush with the block in that area. Just use a straightedge to test the height. I use the nylon timing gears which are thicker than original ones and I've never needed the bronze shim, just the steel ones. You can use some of the (3) flat washers in the transmission behind the clutch drum for this if you have any used ones lying around and save the $20 cost of the shim kit. Your idea of fitting them by "feel" should work well and be an accurate way to do it.
Mike I like your first suggestion. It would save pulling the crank back out. Don the guy I am doing this motor for may have the instructions.
Thanks
