Ok here's the thing ...I sold my 26 Coupe and got a 27 Tudor but when I drove it home it had this nasty wobble every now and then...After reading and looking it over I found the bushing in the steering bracket is worn...Today I got the pin out of the spark leaver arm after soaking for a day and I was able to get the steering bracket off and found this bushing in the bracket..
There's little dents on the inside to get the grease on the shaft better also a cut out for the grease....
Now will the new bushing will it fit tight in the bracket and the shaft will turn on the inside? Also the felt washer...it goes in between the bracket and the pitman arm right?
Let me know what you guys think
Eric,
The bushing you removed was some aftermarket item that someone installed long ago. It's not the usual "factory" type of bushing. The replacement you've got should press in the housing. After pressing in, the bushing may need to reamed to resize it so the steering shaft will slide in.
The felt goes in the groove on the upper end of the bracket and keeps out dust while holding oil.
Eric,
The photo of your steering shaft looks odd. Can you please post another photo, showing the keyway?
Yes I can take a few more pic's.. there are some wear marks on it.
So the felt goes inside the bracket in the grove at the top then.....and thanks for the help with this!!!!
If it's a '26-'27 I don't think they have that felt. Smarter folks than me will confirm or correct this.
Larry
Eric, it sounds like you have the longer bracket from the 25 and earlier cars, they are longer and don't fit the same holes as the 26/27 bracket.
Rick
Note the Parts Book picture, the '26 is different as the body is lower.
'26-'27 Roadster type...part #3539D Factory # 996B
Here's the pic's of the shaft...
Here's a few pic's of the bracket also...
The reason I got the felt washer was it said its for the 27 and I thought It would keep the dirt out and the grease in...But I don't really see how it will fit in there...
The 26/27's do not use the felt seal.
Stephen
Your shaft needs to be built up Eric. I had one done with spray welding and turned down to standard several years ago. I don't recall the cost, but it wasn't much, or I would have done something else. Dave
