Finished the Retro Camp Trailer and took it to Yosemite on an overnighter. Basically started with a $99 1973 Appleby Camp trailer ....made a new axle w/ modern hubs , 5 on 5. Had to slightly taper the end of the hubs and cut the lugs.... 2 - 1926 / 27 wire wheels and new tires and tubes. Added a rear inner frame and cut a door , used a very early trailer door lock on the inside and a Patented 1921 Auto door handle on the outside...sold to me as a Ford Model T handle but I think it may be off something else. made a set of steps, took the body off and redid the frame with some more supports and braces. Made a rack and spare tire holder for the top lid and an ice chest holder on the front for a 1917 ice chest ( called a nursery ice box in the old catalogs). Made some new frame work as the old stuff was rusty. Made the tent ( with no pattern to start with !) using a 1939 Singer Model 66 a put a new 1.5 amp motor on.... sewed like crazy. The body work is so-so, I don't have the patience and aluminum is hard to straighten.... shot it in Dark green urethane ... Last time I bought paint it cost maybe $50.... up to $135 for a pint , reducer, hardener and a couple cans of primer ...yikes !
I will have to take some detail pictures later ....
oh yeah... and the tortures I had to put up with while taking pics....my wife and her 3 friends ...silly filipinas !
Very cool Dan! I've always wanted to do something like that, don't know if I'll ever get it done though. Great job! Dave
Great job Dan I like it.
Do you plan to pull it behind your T. I would like to see a picture of that all hooked together when you get time. That looks like a commercial sewing machine. You did a good job on the design of the tent and sewing looks good too. Joe
Like Joseph said. What does it look like all folded up, ready for the road? Does it unfold easier than a "one man top"?
Neat! I want to see it hooked behind the T ready to go camping.
Drive carefully, and enjoy, W2
Thanks guys for the comments. Now I need to move on to the Model T and put the radiator back in and get it on the road. I have a small laundry list of "to does" on the Model T . I will need to put on the spare tire holder and adapt/make a hitch to pull the trailer ....I have several ideas floating around in the old brain. i will post some pictures of it folded down, but it's real dirty from the mud on the road from the rains , and the paint is fairly fresh so I am actually waiting to wash it . As a note , I didn't really know what to expect from the Kerosene lights, but was amazed they stayed lite at 55 plus miles per hour.... pretty darn good design.
I never had the experience of a "one man top" as I have a speedster... it's pretty easy to set up...lots of ties inside though to keep the tent on.
