I recently broke the lower part of the windshield on my 15 touring. When I took the old plate glass out it didn't seem to be bedded in anything! Just slid into the brass channel and then the brass channel was slid into the frame.

Is this correct? Was there no bedding compound used ?

Thanks
schuh

Hi Bud,

Yes, what you found on your car is how the factory assembled the windshield frame and glass: Brass channel onto the glass and then that "assembly" is inserted into the windshield frame. No tape nor bedding compound.

Good luck with your project. Bill

As a mater of interest, what glass do you intend to put back. Plate, laminated, toughened or shatter glass as I have seen some cars in the states running the plate glass.... Ray

Bud, for your own safety, put some type of safety glass as a replacement. I believe safety glass is also acceptable for judging if you are into that. Some tours do not allow you to drive the tour with the old plate glass. (they do not give you the banner till after the tour)

Bill - thanks for the info !

Ray - The glass that broke was the original plate glass, I will replace it with laminated safety glass.

The lower windshield is 3.2 sq. ft. and the best price I've found so far is $42.51.

Other advice on the forum was to DIY and NOT tell the glass people it was for a car ... good advice--all of it !!

A personal observation: When installing the lower windshield frame, careful how much torque you use on the bolts. Mine warped the frame ever so slightly and the glass broke during the night.

Cheers

Hi Bud, the way to look at it is, what is the lives of the people worth that ride with you, you hit a big hole or some clown hits you from behind and the screen breaks into 8" dagger shaped pieces and goes through your daughters neck or your wifes chest then was $42 dollars the value of them, who cares what it costs as long as you and those who ride with you are safe so buy the good laminated glass and get the shop to fit it and then they wear the cost if it breaks. (Other advice on the forum was to DIY and NOT tell the glass people it was for a car) like what brain less moron would do that when you can go to the auto glass people and get the right stuff and not telling them its for a car is not worth any comment because if the person who inspects the car can not see the proof stamp on the glass should reject it on the spot.. Bud,
Don't worry about the laminate stamp, as anyone can look at the open edge (between the top & bottom) and see the laminate layer. BTW, most glass shops do not do a nice job of polishing that edge, they leave it sorta rough. NO PROBLEM! put some masking tape on the glass surface on both sides (so you don't accidentally scratch the new glass doing the next step). Using wet or dry sandpaper, and a sanding block start with 600 wet, and move up to 1200 wet. The edge will look polished when you're done. If you really want to, and you are careful, you can use polishing compound and a wheel for the final step--but now you're Gilding the Lilly!
Don't forget to take off the masking tape when done. :-)

I bought laminated for the Touring and replaced the old plate glass. However, the little caps that hold the glass into the frame chipped the glass and as time went by, a crack propagated from the corner across the glass. Happened on the top and bottom piece. I think I will have them cut it a hair shorter this time. BTW, it was less than $80 for both pieces. Hope I can get it for that again.

Hi Guys, I fitted my laminated glass in 1980 and have covered thousands of miles around Australia and used it as a off road vehicle by driving through scrub or driving around the rough paddocks plus using the upper corner to pull it down and it has never broken or chipped and Peter Kable who is on this forum will state how I use the vehicle. I used a clear sealing compound to fill the channel then pushed the screen in to it and wiped off the excess and the same with the top bar/hinge and caps.... Ray

david

I think I'll take your advice and polish the top edge. I will carry the old glass in to town tomorrow (for them to use as a pattern) and order the new safety glass.
