I am setting up the firewall, fenders, hood shelf and splash aprons on my 1926 chassis. I am looking for a picture to depict the relationship of these parts at the firewall. A single picture should do it. Thanks again in advance. John

Here's one:
hood shelf
(from this auction: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1926-Model-T-Ford-Roadster-Pickup-/160792159279 )

Here's an old discussion on assembly order in this area: http://www.mtfca.com/discus/messages/118802/166891.html?1290974547
Do you have the Model T service manual? There's a description of the improved car and how to assembly these parts in there.

I'm working from memory so .... I have a larger gap between the firewall and the hood shelf than I see in these photos. I have to look at it again and see what's going on. I'm thinking something needs to be shifted. I'll post some pictures to get your opinions.

Jim, this Radiator mounting was used starting in 1926 right?

Yes. If I'm not mistaken, according to photos in Bruce McCalley's book, I believe that, prior to 1926, the hood shelf butted up to the radiator foot. After 1926, the radiator foot sat on top of the hood shelf. Jim Patrick

The fire wall brackets are from a 26 roadster.

John,

Is this the car you have listed as “pile of parts” on your profile page? I so – you have probably already experienced the “original Ford part looks the same, fits, but doesn’t function the same for all years and body styles.” A couple of questions may (or may not) help:

What type of fire wall are you mounting onto the frame? Most of the 1926-27 cars had a the firewall as part of the body. The TT’s I believe but do not have the time to check it right now continued to use the 1924-25 style car high cowl dash.

What type of frame are you mounting it to? Has it been pieced together? And if so do you know if they used all 1926-27 car parts (no TT)?

You stated the firewall brackets were off a 1926 roadster – did you see the roadster body on the fame and did they line things up properly for that car? Or did you purchase the brackets and the seller told you they were for a 1926 roadster? Or were the brackets on a 1926-27 roadster body that was not attached to a frame or attached but without the hood and hood shelves etc.?

The reason I ask is the different cars used different parts. Looking at the photo of the bracket on your chassis it has a cut out area rather than just a straight bracket. Looking at only a couple of other photos as well as the illustration in the parts book – they show a straight edge without any sort of cut out area. Not sure if they were made both ways or not. But I suspect you have at least one wrong part or perhaps the correct part but installed improperly.

Below is the page from the Aug 5, 1928 Price List of Parts. Note the several different styles and that the 1924-25 high cowl was used but on the opposite side for the 1926-27 cars.

You have a great start on a T -- I'm sure you will get this sorted out and it will be a minor fix. (Much easier fix than putting the rear axle ring gear on the other side -- it fits great -- and having 2 speeds in reverse and only one speed and sort-of slow forward.)

Respectfully submitted,

Hap I have a 26 roadster frame. I purchased it from a hot rodder. He removed the body to restore and use on a hot rod chassis. The fire wall brackets were left behind. I never saw the assembled car.

The fire wall was purchased from Model T Haven. It is from a 27 fordur. The hood shelves and aprons were also purchased from Model T Haven at the same time. I explained what I had and what I wanted to do, this is supposed to work. The brackets may be the problem. I noticed there are a pair of smaller holes on the fire wall next to the brackets. What are the for?

Ideas?

I am just realizing one thing....The firewall on the 27 is wrapped by the cowl. The cowl is spot welded the the fire wall. Does the cowl extend beyond the bottom of the fire wall possibly closing this gap? Maybe all is well and it only looks different because the cowl has been removed from the fire wall.

Sometimes building from parts is very easy and other times it can help you learn so much more about the differences in the Model Ts. The 1926-27 Fordor firewall is unique to that body only. It used the 1926-27 steering column. The 1926-27 Fordor was basically the same as the 1925 Fordor except for the cowl. It also is the only Ford to use the lower steering column bracket for the 1926-27 Fordor rather than the standard 1926-27 all other car models. Note the 1919-1927 Trucks all used a different bracket than the cars. I’ll let some one else post photos etc for the 1926-27 Fordor cowls to frame etc.

But if you use the 1926-27 Fordor cowl/firewall then you will also need to use the 1926-27 Fordor lower steering bracket. Please see the following for additional details about the need to use parts from the same year range and in the case of the Fordor from the same year range and body i.e. 1926-27 Fordor unique.

Actually a 1924 firewall but while they discuss it they address some 1926-27 firewall questions see: http://www.mtfca.com/discus/messages/50893/69326.html?1224293232

Off to do more yard work.

John,

I suspect but I do not know for sure as I do not have an "improved car" that the gap is the result of the firewall being removed from the cowl. The photo below is form the thread posted by Joe Knockwafel of his 1927 Depot Hack at: http://www.mtfca.com/discus/messages/50893/58895.html

Note it looks like it also has the same space. Unfortunately Joe’s profile is not still active from the 2008 posting. Does anyone have a good e-mail address for him? If you are building a 1926-27 project using a depot hack, roadster body etc. he would be a good person to talk with.

Related posting about using a 1926-27 chassis are located at:
http://www.mtfca.com/discus/messages/118802/169318.html
and also:
http://www.mtfca.com/discus/messages/118802/169318.html

It also has the same style frame to firewall bracket that was in your photo with the cut out/recess part rather than a straight edge.

Hopefully someone who has mounted just the firewall removed from a 1926-27 cowl can comment on the space being created or not.
