During the exchange of my gearbox I have had the engine open, obviously.
I hav used Kewlar bands since I started to drive the car back in 2006, but have only swapped one band (the braking band I think).
All over the coil ring and it's surroundings I found this:
Interesting enough the inner oil tube was clear...
Everybody may draw their own conclusions (cotton bands would probably make same kind of "snot" but the reinforcing fibers may not be as persistant as the kewlar :-) I have wood bands in now.
If they are cotton wood, they may leave a similar mess, Ha, only kidding.
Michael, How do the wood bands compare so far?
I will report when I get the engine back in the car.
If you look in my other thread:

i'm just not there yet ;-)
My expectations are high, though as I have put som effort in ensuring round bands.
Michael, If your implying that this is "Kevlar" that you found in your engine, then you have some serious problems with trans drums or driving habits. Wood bands won't help either one of those issues. Let see a picture of your trans drums.
Here's a picture of bands with 12,ooo miles (19,ooo KM)I do a lot of city and hilly driving. The brake band isn't really a shiny as what the digital picture makes it appear. I replaced that band though, but the later turned it around and reused it on a reverse band in another engine.
