Guys: I have just put a new gas tank in my 11 Touring. What do you all use for a gas strainer? I have tried the filter that the old owner had in there NOT. I have tried a different filter, NOT. I tried a B&S lawnmower strainer, NOT. Runs fine with nothing in the line, install a strainer and the engine runs out of fuel. What do I need? All I see is the sediment bowl and there is no strainer on an 11? Thanks, Dan
Does the '11 sediment bowl not have a screen? If your tank is new, I would think a sediment bowl would be quite sufficient.
The sediment bowl is soldered to the tank; I am assuming the tap is on the outside of the chassis. I hunted high & low and bought a small gravity fed glass sediment bowl from an old tractor. It works a treat...
There is no strainer on an '11. A small piece of the gas tank overhangs a passageway in the sediment bulb. This passageway leads out to the fuel line. The little piece of tin that forms the roof over the outlet passageway deflects the impurities to the side where it is supposed to fall into the sediment containment part of the assembly. Bad design. The reproduction tanks are worse than the originals, they don't even get the little roof part right. Not only that, but an '11 that I bought recently came with a reproduction tank complete with a sediment bulb with a sand pocket in the casting that allowed the dirty gas to flow right into the clean side. Reproduction junk. I think I'll try Davids idea with the old glass bowl sediment bulb.
David: Can you post a picture of the bowl you used? I was looking at some of those, but there is not a lot of room for something like that. I had to take tank loose and move to one side just to install the shut off. Thanks, Dan.
Here it is guys, an easy fit if you get one small enough. Works a treat and easy to see if there are any problems. Just make sure it is a gravity feed type...
Your "filter" is the chamois skin that you strain the gas through when filling the tank. Takes the water out too. At least that is an era correct solution.
Boy, do I miss the good old days Dan
Boy, those power terminals look a little too close to that Gas line for me! One good bump and KABLOOEEE!!!
The photo is deceptive due to the angle, there is well over an inch gap. Contrary to what you see the terminals are only an isolation switch for a simple 12V battery, massive overkill.
I was just funnin you Dave.
Fred
Phew, I thought you were serious!!!!
