I am considering replacing the top to my 22 Touring car. The top I have now looks to be a off white fabric color on the inside, the new tops appear to be black or dark in color..Does anyone know what the orginal color of the underside of a top would have been?

I can only tell you that I put new black top on a rusty car I keep outside and after 11 years it is almost an off white anyplace the light gets to. Have you checked a spot that hasn't seen daylight for years?

The exterior is still black it's the underside that is dirty and stained but look like it was off white or at least canvas color

My dad has the original top, top boot and side curtains from his 1917 Ford touring. He purchased the car in unrestored condition from the original owners family in 1949.

The original material is an off-white/tan. I just happen to have a picture of the top boot where you can see the backing - see below.

I've seen variations of the tan color on other original tops and side curtains. Some of it is darkening/browning of the color mainly due to dirt.

Black may not be authentic, but it is much more attractive than the tan backing.

Joe, I don't know what the original T may have come out with but every vintage or veteran car including my current T of which the top was replaced some 8 years ago, have been off white on the under side.

Sorry if I was confusing. I meant the inside material was fading to a light color. Sounds like the material is different since the late 80's. I like the canvas colored backing and remember it being on old side curtains.

I purchased a new top from Classtique. The underside is black.

Cartouche (MAC's) sells tops too. The underside is also black.

The original tops I've seen were off-white underneath, but the modern top material apparently only comes in black underside. I would prefer the off-white, even though it's harder to keep clean, because it makes the interior lighter, and I think provides a nice contrast to the black top outsides.

Eric, you have a scarce boot there. What you have pictured is the center grommet that the strap goes through to pull the bottom side of the boot up. It is the real thing for sure.
