Australia cannot boast the great high mountains of the USA and other parts of the globe, however we do have some rather attractive scenery. Earlier this week my wife and I took two days off for a trip to one of Victoria's highest mountains, which is a mere 6,106 feet, but we only stayed at road level of 5,740 feet.

Our vehicle for the trip is a 1959 Rover 90. I am sure that in years gone by an occasional T owner traversed the region over much poorer roads than we encountered.

If you would like to see a short tale of the trip go to this link, but beware there are quite a few photographs.

Dane Hawkey:

WOW that would be great Model T Country. And there didn't appear to be much traffic.

Yes indeed Dave, great Model T country, but I would consider accessory brakes a wise move, either those or a total lack of fear!

Now that is nice countryside. I'd love to drive over that, preferably though, without the white stuff, as I have had minimal experience of driving over that. It snows where I live on a regular basis- last time was August 2005, and the time before that was August 1955.

Dane Hawley:

The road was clear and bare to the overlook where I took the picture but the road was blocked on Higher up because of snow. I had to read your post twice trying to figure out snow in August but then I remembered you are South of the equator. We are really hurting for snow in Colorado this year which means that the surrounding states will be short of water this coming summer. I would like to show you the difference in a normal snow pack and the snow pack this winter in the same spot. We are down to 35 percent of normal snow pack.

Snow pack last year in one spot

last years snow pack

Compare with the same spot this year

this years snow back

The two pictures above are at the same location and the same time of year to the day. You can see why the water people are worried about run off this year. I just hope there is enough storage in the reservoirs to let me irrigate this coming summer.

The picture below was taken on December 5th last year. The road was closed so I could not get up to where the pictures were taken above. The picture was at two miles above sea level (10,560 feet).

Dane-
You are most welcome to join us again for another tour on some of those roads you pictured. Hopefully in the Spring to avoid the snow and poor weather. I plan to have a four day tour with overnight stays in Omeo, Corryong and back to Omeo again travelling from Omeo to Corryong via the 'Gibb Rd' and returning via Tallangatta and the Omeo Highway. Forty years ago my Dad travelled the Gibb Rd. in his newly restored 1916 Touring and tipped it over while rounding a hairpin bend when the steering went over centre and reversed. He has always told me of this story so I hope to retrace his trip this year and the trip will cover so of the roads you have memntioned.

Dave- Thanks for that information and photos.

Warwick- That sounds like a really interesting tour. I'll bear it in mind.
