I install a new set of kevlar bands in my 1926 model t ford and started the car and move it forward about 20 ft. and backwards to get the feel of the new bands. After several times doing this I stop and tried to put the emergency brake on and it would not go back but half way. The car now starts on battery but will not run on magneto anymore. I'm mechanicly minded but don't know what to do next. If anyone could point me in the right dirction would be great. Please help! Thanks

Your Magneto contact point might not be making contact with solder button on top of the mag ring. Try unscrewing the magneto contact on top of the hogshead, examine the contact point. If the point is flat or dull, sharpen it with a Dremel tool (it must seat in the soft solder button to make a good contact). Straighten the contact point so it points straight down, then carefully insert it into the hole and screw it down. It should embed itself into the solder button. Jim Patrick

Jerry, here is a question I asked back in 2011 when I was having trouble with my emergency brake. It may not address your problem, but does have some useful advice on adjusting the emergency brake lever and clutch. www.mtfca.com/discus/messages/179374/245659.html

Question: When you installed the hogshead, are you sure the transmission clutch release ring (not really a ring, it has an open bottom and looks more like a U) seated properly in the transmission clutch shift pulley groove?

If you had the hogs head off, it is quite possible that it is not installed correctly. Jim Patrick has a good thought about the clutch release. If it is not correctly seated, the high speed clutch will not work right either. If the hogs head is not properly seated, the magneto plug might not be in contact with the button on top of the magneto. Also, you will have major oil leaks. Other than that, there should be no change in the magneto or the parking brake unless you purposely adjusted them.

Maybe you can find someone nearby with knowledge about Model T's who could look at it and help you find out the cause of the problem.

Good luck.
Norm

Thanks guys, I'm assuming that I need to pull the engine and transmission out of the car and try to find out what has the emergency brake stuck. I took the top off the hogshead and removed the linkage on the emergency brake and still can't move it. All looked okay in the top of the transmission. I forgot to mention that the magneto did work fine up until all this started with the emergency brake thing. I have been starting and running the car for the last six months while I have been restoring it. Is it possible that something was picked up by the magnets and damaged the contact point. I really appreciate all the input and if anyone else can pitch in some thoughts would be greatful also. Thanks again.

Did you remove the hogs head to do the band replacement? If so, did you remove the starter bendix before removing the starter? It's pretty easy to damage the mag ring if you try to remove the starter without taking the bendix off first.

The emergency brake is pretty straight forward. It should not be necessary to remove the engine to troubleshoot the emergency brake. Disconnect the two rods from the cross shaft. If it's still binding, you've probably got a transmission linkage problem.

Can you post pics of the pedal side of the tranny?

Hal, last fall I removed the hogs head to replace the gaskets and bands (I have the new design bands that dosen't require hogs head removal) and I did removed the starter bendix before removing the hogs head to prevent damage to the mag ring. I have removed the linkage from the emergency brake and still can't the shaft that the clutch release fork is attached. I'm including some pictures hoping someone can see something that I'm not seeing. Also the car was runninng on magneto and died and when I started back it would not run on magneto anymore but would run on battery.

Hal, I tried to post some pictures but I can't get it to work for some reason. I will continue to try and maybe the pictures will come later. Thanks
