What is with all these Model Ts throwing themselves into road construction holes?

...how did these drivers NOT SEE the HUGE, GAPING TRENCHES in the MIDDLE OF THE STREET!?

"Holy crap! ..Where did THAT come from Ethel!?"

"I'm sorry officer, I'm not drunk...that ditch just jumped right out in front of me!"

:-)

Steve - I thought the same thing. I have a cousin who's husband was killed back in the '70's due to working in a ditch like that without proper protection. I don't know what they call the steel thing that must be used (by law I believe nowadays) in an excavated ditch over a certain depth. Looks to me like very, very inadequate protection in the ditch in Garnet's photo!

I see in the 4th photo the lawyer is already on the scene with his briefcase in hand.

Probably texting and not paying attention to the lantern.

The vehicles were parked at the side of the road and some idiot dug those trenches under them! :-)

The term is "shoring up" using spreader bars - nowadays we use steel or fiberglass trench boxes or drop 1" thick steel sheets down along the trench. Really depends on what type of earth you are digging through.

See you there Harold - is the Hack running ?

Not yet Steve,......I've developed a problem with my shoulder; the shoulder that I had surgery on about 12 years ago due to a torn rotator cuff. It's slowly getting a bit less sore, but I've really been "babying it" as I sure don't want to go thru' that same surgery and all that physical therepy that I did 12 years ago! (But I sure am anxious to get that new engine installed!) I'll get there,....it's only early May, right? See ya' tomorrow,....harold

Clayton, I think it's kind of like Fainting Sheep - the Model T gets scared and just flips over suddenly trying to feign death.

Historical News flash;
Due to the excessive number of accidents in the construction zone on Elm street, the Driver's License Office has now included a vision test as part of the license exam. Seems many new drivers were still relying on horse sense. That is they are too use to depending on their horse to keep them out of the ditches.

Wheel shimmy! The driver was going slowly, and the wheels started to shake violently throwing him into the ditch. I think the last 3 pictures were of the same car from different angles.

The third photo down shows paper debris spilling out of the car. Obviously this is evidence of an early case of "texting" while driving.

Such is the end of all multi-tasking drivers.

Be Alert! Lerts have less accidents;)

These are some great pictures of a nearly new, fairly early 1915 touring. It has Firestone Non - Skid rear tires, and all four wheels are Firestone demountable 5 lugs. The asbestos on the muffler is still very white, and the paint shiny. Look at the 12 rivet rear axle which was replaced pretty early in 1915 production!

Wow, I thought 1915 cars had a metal cowl former over the plywood firewall. You learn something new every day. I would have guessed that car was a '14 or maybe '13!

I should have mentioned that. The top two are of the same car, and the bottom three are of the same car.
