I've researched the old Forums and only found an 8 year old AACA post giving a Maryland glass shop who will cut, crate and ship anywhere. I'm trying to replace the .18" plate glass in my '19 centerdoor. So far, Larry Smith back in November '11 this Forum had the best idea. Get the quarter inch glass everyone sells and have them bevel both sides so it'll fit in the brass channel. Anyone found any .18" -or 3/16" - laminated windshield glass anywhere??
George -- You can get 3/16" tempered glass at any glass shop (to order, of course). I know it's not the same thing, but it might work for you.
The lady that runs Carolina Auto Glass in Shelby, NC said she could get it, but I'd have to buy the whole piece. If she could order it, your local glass shop probably can too.
Thanks Mike but, after reading that post of Nov.4-11 of 2011 I danged sure don't want tempered glass. I really hate to change out the original plate and lose the 1981 state inspection sticker but safety third!! I've always said! Man, I love originality in a Model T and regret restoring this '19 instead of preserving it. The middle eastern couple that run the Low Price Auto Glass franchise (161 in the U.S.) said they couldn't order it but I must admit we had somewhat of a language problem. Then the Glass Doctor in Austin couldn't order it. My buddy over in Engle, TX and a frequent Forum participant has two centerdoors with safety glass but neither has the brass channels.
I used 1/4" safety glass in my touring, and reused the original glass channels.
Each frame was 51 dollars.
The quest is finally over. . . . Our friend Willie Cordes turned me on to Schulenburg Glass Co and I had both windshield frames cut and installed last Tuesday. Now I'm very appreciative to Willie for the referral but I wouldn't recommend them because of the cost. That said; I'd go to them again because of the frustration of calling windshield shops and being told they don't do flat laminate or they don't cut glass to fit. Then calling glass shops and beiing told they don't do windshields because of the liability. Two guys took 3 hours to do my '19 centerdoor windshield and the cost was $186. They used 1/4" laminate and beveled it to fit in the original brass channels. Like mike black said above; both Safelite and this Schulenburg Glass shop could get 3/16" laminate but someone would have to buy the entire sheet. . . . Oh well . .
I buy glass in Schulenburg for half the price it cost george, but I install it myself and do not have the extra labor and fitting charges.
Well, . . . . I have a Great Deal more money than Willie but am not near as smart or as good looking
I just spend $68.oo for both upper and lower windshield 1/4" safety glass, they cut it and I installed it. Was thrilled at that price. '27 Fordor.
I have replaced the glass in my 22 centerdoor windshield with 1/4 safety glass in the brass channel. But when I removed the original glass I measured the finished edges and the top piece was 3/16 at the point I measured. Thinking this was odd I measured the thickness all the way around and found it to be tapered from 1/4 to 3/16. I think this was just a quality issue so I went with 1/4 all the way. Point is check the thickness all around, you may find irregularity. The total price for safety glass all around was $380.00. That was 8 pieces.
Iam doing my brass era car (1912) and purchased an aftermarket windshield. It came complete with the two brass divider bars. These are the pieces that fit horizontaly between the upper and lower glass. The problem iam having is that the glass clamps are not big enough to straddle the divider bars. They are only wide enough to straddle the glass with rubber setting tape. The bars will fall off when the window is folded down if not secured. Can someone post a pick of the glass clamp area for me ? I want to use the bars.
