Took the 14 T out yesterday to go to the "Old Folks Home". I just re-built the coil box with a Funprojects kit, had all my coils rebuilt, and put new wires(spark plug) on the car. She runs like a top on battery, but runs real rough on mag. Sputters a bit and won't get up to rpm's.
Any suggestions??
What is the proper way to check a mag?
Thanks....Chip
Is the timer clean? Wires connected tight?
To test magneto output use the Regan - Patterson memorial test procedure:
Wire a #1156 bulb across from the mag post to ground. I made mine by soldering a foot of wire and two alligator clips to the bulb, then wrapping duct tape around the bulb base.
Start the engine and measure the voltage at the mag post. It ought to be 5 - 6 volts AC at idle and about 18 - 30 volts at higher engine speed, typically enough to burn out the bulb in a few minutes time. The cheaper the voltmeter the better, I use an analog unit from Radio shack that cost $9.95.

I assume you are using the coils I rebuilt for you last January and are using original style spark plug wires?
The absolute best way to check your magneto is with a St. Louis magneto tester made by FunProjects. Next best thing is do as Royce suggests and report back your findings. You MUST use a 1156 bulb and an analog ac voltmeter. We need to know the voltage readings at idle, medium speed and running as fast as you feel comfortable.
Give me a call with results and we can discuss.

Thanks Royce. I could not remember the proper procedure.
One more important point.
The analog meter (one with a needle)is a must.
A digital meter (one with a numeric readout)will not work.
Another good plan is to keep a few extra 1156 bulbs on hand. They can work like the old flash bulbs with a good mag.
Thanks Ron. I will go get an analog meter and a bulb and get back to you this afternoon....Chip
Thank you James also.
Ron, Royce or James, should the Mag wire be disconnected to do the test?
Chip
Assuming the car has original wiring, that is not necessary , BUT it is important that when conducting the test and taking the voltage measurements you run the engine with the key switch in the "Bat" position.

Thanks Ron.
The Mag wire is automatically disconnected when you are running on Bat, if your wiring is correct.
Are 1156 bulbs available at the auto parts store or do I need to order them from a vendor?

Standard backup light bulb on a modern car.
