Below is a derecho. When I was little I used to be a little interested in thunderstorms and how they work so I looked it up and found this.

A Derecho is a windstorm that usually occurs in the Summer and can create winds up to 100 miles per hour. The clouds of them look very vicious and weird. Below is a photo of a Derecho cloud.

Is that the kind which causes tornados? I have never lived in tornado country, so I am not at all familiar with them.

I'll take our California earthquakes any day over that.

The dark area is a wall cloud. That's were the tornadoes come from.
My family and I were caught in this tornado in July of 2010. My California cousins, my wife and I were driving around visiting family grave sites. We stopped to eat at a restaurant in Indianola when the storm hit. When the storm warning went off, we were asked to go into the rest rooms. The restaurant lost electricity so we were packed in a dark restroom with 30 strangers. The rain and hail came down so hard, the streets flooded and we had a terrible time getting home. My cousins were not used to this and they were quite excited.

They are more scary at night when you can't see them coming.

John Berch is actually correct. Derechos can cause tornadoes.

I remember the Joplin Tornado. I was at school when it happened and here in Boonville we had a tornado warning on the same day at school and we had to take cover. Though there was only a funnel, it never touched down, but every time the Air Conditioners turned on it made everyone scream like the tornado is on us. There was crying and I was glad it was over with.

Also I remember having a Tornado Warning at my home. We got out and drove up to the church just up the road since we lived in a mobile home with no basement or storm cellar. We just stayed in the truck. This was at night, so we couldn't see what was happening. But about 2 miles away from us a tornado was happening but it was rain wrapped and we could not see it.

The next day we found out a brick house 2 miles from us was picked up and not a brick was left. It was really scary. At my house which was 2 miles away from the tornado there wasn't even a slight breeze. It was extremely strange.

Also forgot to mention that the last post about the brick house disappearing was at my old home in Saline County, Missouri near Arrow Rock, Missouri.

If a Tornado happened in Arrow Rock, that little historic village would be devastated. Most of the buildings in it date back to the late 1800's and would be picked up easily thanks to a wood foundation. The tornado happened about 3 miles from Arrow Rock. I was little back then, it happened when I was 5 years old. I had no computer then, but remember it on TV. I was scared and tried getting into the bathtub until my parents explained that the bathtub wouldn't be the safe place in a mobile home because the pipes are plastic and don't really go into the ground.
