with this wood/canvas/resin body i'm making, what type of primer and paint do I use that will flex with any twisting in the canvas?

1. The body is fairly firm with several coats of resin. I don't expect any issue with air at highway speeds flexing the body shape however I do question any twisting with the chassis on uneven ground. But because the body is so light maybe there will be very little flexing of the frame.

2. Because I'm painting over a poly resin, is there a better primer type for this?

I would suggest you stop by a small airport and ask those folds what they use on fabric covered airplanes.

Tyrone, what type and where did you use resin? The resin used in fibreglass work is rigid and does not take twisting and wracking very well. If you have used it on the canvas you may have a problem. Ordinary brushable enamel will flex much more readily.Primers for this type of paint are hardware shop items. Brushing paint on canvas gives an entirely acceptable finish, given the textured weave of the canvas.

Hope this helps.

Allan from down under.

Tyrone, I have used an epoxy base resin and paint on several canvas boat decks. It seems to hold up to a lot of flexing on the boats.West System Epoxy might be worth looking into.

Allen. to answer you. I have laminates three layers of a painters quality heavy duck with a coat of 3-M poly resin between. I used two coats on the outer duck to raise the fibric to sand smooth. Two more coats to finish. I can press in on the larger areas. It moves in and out like a light metal panel. In smaller areas such as corners, it is stiff.

I wish I had though of painting the canvas prior to finish resin.

That you all. Come paint time I will let you know.

Auto body paint supply can provide a flex additive. It is used when painting bumpers and filler panels to prevent chipping.

If your coating with resin why not add a color additive to the resin, blend with a microball and paint that on. It will be self leveling and should produce a good finish.

Good call John on the flex additive. I thought about adding the paint but two things I can think of that would not work well. The resin im using only has a pot life of 12 minutes. Two, i'm brushing it on which tends to leave marks and when sanded, the sanded resin turns dull milky color. Can't spray it for its thickness and the resins set up time. Now perhaps someone knows more them me about this then I do.
