Model T Ford Forum: Forum 2012: Generator adjustment question.

I have been reading past threads to learn as much as I can about adjusting the 3rd brush.

I have one of those S shaped generator adjusting wrenches. But on my generator I do not see a nut for it to fit. It seems that I do remember having seen a nut to turn on a previous T generator but can’t swear to that.

I have included a picture looking down into the open end of my generator.
1. Do I happen to have a generator that doesn’t have that nut to loosen for adjustment?
2. Is the round headed slotted screw the adjustment?

Eugene, the "slotted screw" is really the mounting post for the brush spring. Look in the hole to the right of the terminal post from the brush end and you will see the small nut on the third brush holder.

Eugene, here is a link to a previous discussion. It has a good picture of the brush plate (without the brushes and springs installed)
The nut is visible however.

Your generator is assembled incorrectly.
The brushplate has been installed in the wrong position hence you cannot see or get access to the third brush adjusting nut.

Eugene
At first I was confused by your photo.
I took another look and I am wrong about the assembly of your generator. Sorry.
Here is a photo of a brushplate properly installed inside a brushcap. You can see the 5/16 nut on the third brush.

This is the nut you must access and loosen to move the third brush and the reason the wrench is "S" shaped.

I didn't know about an "s" shaped wrench and had a gosh awful time doing that with regular wrenches!

The Forum is such a wonderful place for Model T information. And that is because of the wonderful folks who take the time to be helpful.
Most of us know that. Thanks.
I got smart and bent down and looked up and saw the nut in the lower opening near the hood shelf. IS THIS CORRECT?

Ron had mentioned in a 2011 post that he had an easy fix if it was wrong.

My little wrench, it turns out is not the right size.
So, Hi Ho, it’s off to Fun we go for a wrench and a Fun cutout from John R.

That is the correct location of the third brush.
Get one of FunProjects 5-Z-806 wrenches and adjusting the nut on the third brush is easy.
If you have any trouble give me a call.

Ron, that stationary brush in the center that is not really a part of the new insulators, that brush is not really insulated from the plate right??

Craig,

I did order John's #5505 Generator cut-out. Is there a difference other than the price? There must be.

The cutout is a cutout.....the solid state regulator, in the same can, actually IS a regulator.
The 5505 is a Model T Cutout.
The regulators are in a class by themselves....... :D
