Is the Ruckstell meant to shift when the car is stationary or only when it is moving or both? Occasionally I'll be stopped and realize that I want the lower gearing. Sometimes it goes in with no problem, other times I have to move forward a bit and try again, and other times it goes in with a metallic thunk. Makes me wonder if I'm doing any damage.
I do not expect it to shift like a synchronized transmission. But it helps to have a sanity check sometimes.
Thanks,
Dan B
G'day Dan,
You can shift on the fly, just hit the clutch pedal to take the load off when shifting. Throttle back on the upshift, and as the car slows and loads, just hit the pedal and shift quickly as the engine revs come up. A slight grumble from the unit occurs as things line up, nothing to worry about unless it really grinds and protests at engaging. Practice makes perfect, don't be afraid of it, you will soon learn how it wants to be treated.

Thanks Peter! Do not seem to have too many problems shifting when moving; mostly it's when sitting still. Do you find one easier than the other? Almost makes me feel like its not meant to shift when stationary.
If there is a load on the diff, usually is if you are holding on the brake pedal, pull the park brake and them have a go with the load off the diff.

When down shifting, you depress the high low pedal to the neutral position and pull back the lever quickly. If you have the newer 26-27 shift assembly you preload the shifter and quickly depress the pedal. No need to touch the throttle.
To upshift, with a load on the drivetrain, back off the throttle while pushing the lever forward. If you have the 26-27 shift assy, preload the shifter toward and back off the throttle and it will upshift
You should not shift it when you are not moving. There are too many splines that have to line up and you are putting a lot of pressure on the bronze thrust plate if you force it to shift. Just rolling slightly is enough to make it shift.
I know people that shift Ruckstells while sitting still. But I agree with Stan. I don't.
Drive carefully, and enjoy, W2
Good way to break a chunk off the top of the early shifter body too !
Stan is right. The gears may not be lined up properly for shifting when the car is sitting still. The Ruckstell should shift easily when moving but never force it to shift or you will break something.
In my T I have one of Chaffins Rucksells, It's the best addition I ever put in. I shift mine like it's a 4 speed transmission. Keeps the engine well inside in the power band
Thanks everyone. There is a significant difference in ease of shifting depending if the car is moving or not. For now on, I will only do it during the latter.
