Model T Ford Forum: Forum 2012: Coco Cola as a cleaner?

Hey guys. I have some parts i'd like to clean of rust, specifically my carborator. It's pretty bad, but can be saved. I'm thinking of putting it in a small bucket of coca cola for a while, remove it, wipe it down, then let it sit in kerosene to clean with that. Will this work? Does coca cola work as an effective enough remover to make this plausible elsewhere? My Grandfather said he used to use coca cola to clean up parts.

Degrease it and submerge it in Evaporust.

The rust will usually be gone within 24 hours. A black haze will cover the part that you will wash away very easily with water. Dry it and either paint it right away or spray it down with WD-40 as it will re-rust very quickly if you do not.

Evaporust is the quickest and easiest thing that I have ever used. I learned about it on this forum. It's about $22 for a gallon or about $10 for a quart. Non-caustic, non-hazardous. BTW you can reuse it several times depending on how rusty the parts were that you previously treated in it. If you try it you will probably never use anything else. It's that good!

After you finish rebuilding your carb, sit back and enjoy your handy work and have a Coke on me.
You'll be glad you did.

I've used feed-grade molasses from Fleet Farm and water in the past with success but I like Evapo-Rust because it is much faster. I'll never use Naval Jelly again.

Evapo-Rust is currently on sale at Harbor Freight for $21.99 a gallon but you can get it even cheaper for $17.99 if you use their 20% off coupon.

Northern Tool carries it. Autozone carries Evapo-Rust only in quarts.

My experience is that Evapo-Rust does not hurt paint, chrome plating or nickel plating. It will remove galvanized plating and other oxidized finishes such as gun bluing per their website.

If you can't get Evapo-Rust in your area, other products such as Metal-Rescue are the same (last week I bought Metal-Rescue on sale at Menards for $17.99 a gallon).

Evapo-Rust is great stuff. I used it on rusty old Ford wrenches and it took away any signs of rust over night. It can be reused over and over.

Cheapest way is muriatic acid (hydrochloric). I use it diluted 50/50 with water (add acid to water not other way around). Works quickly. It WILL damage paint, hands, etc. Probably can be diluted more but may work a little slower.

Most any hardware store will carry it. Be very careful and work outdoors.

Cheers

I'll have to look into these products you guys suggested. Bud, HCl does sound like a good choice for some of these. I'm a biochemistry major so i'm around the stuff all of the time. I might even be able to wrangle some HF, though that might damage the metal at that point. I'll check the hardware stores near me when i'm back for the summer. To ask one more question though, if I did use coca cola would it work alright? I know i've dissolved nails in the stuff (actually, I believe the acid present in coca cola is HF now that I think about it: makes sense why it works then). Here's hoping I can get that carb all cleaned up again!

I think the active component in coke that cleans rust is phosphoric acid. No harm in using coke, it may work well for you. May leave deposits that can be easily rinsed off with water.

HF is Hydrofloric acid. It will etch glass (and skin) and can be quite dangerous in high concentrations. Nasty stuff.

Has any one tried the esprit brand of de rust chemical? It appears to be about the same stuff as evaporust but is concentrated. Enough to make 10 gals. is about 70 bucks and is resuable. Think I will give it a try unless some one has had negetive results. KB

For what it's worth I saw a neighbor use it to remove rusty pitting on a chrome bumper years ago. It worked but I thought he was just a cheapskate at the time. Also a cup of Coke fell behind a water cooler at work and some months later when it was moved the floor paint had disolved where the Coke had laid.
