Gidday everyone,
I've got a few old rusty sediment bowls I'm having a play around with at the moment to make a good one, and on a couple that the tap is seized up on, someone has tried to drive out the tap part previously to no avail and deformed the shaft where the spring, washers and pin goes, like this:
(Pic taken once I'd got the tap out)
Anyway, I popped the bowls in a container full of diesel for a few days to soak and in the meantime made up a wee driver tool like this out of an old bolt:
It slips over the part that the spring goes over and sits up against the shoulder of the taper, which can happily take the bit more force to drive the tap out. Sorry to be metric here, but the end has a hole that has a dia of 7mm and is about 15mm deep, and the outside dia is 10mm, which is probably pretty close to 1/4 for the hole and 3/8 maybe for the outside ? - I'm sure you guys can work it out !
Then with a couple of light taps with a hammer, hey presto, the taps came out.
Next step, to hopefully clean up the taper so it will seal again like it did years ago !
Regards,
Bede
