Page 30 of Glen Chaffins Model T Ford Front and Rear Axles says "Now apply a liberal coat of gasket sealer to both ends of the (2583B) drive-shaft spool. How is this possible since the drive shaft has already been assembled as instructed on page 20? Once the u-joint pin has been installed there is no room between the drive shaft housing and the front side of the spool.
The position of the drive shaft is fixed after you install the U-joint pin but the spool has a small amount of forward and aft movement possible until you install the 6 spool bolts and tighten them down.
Thanks Glen.....should i use a gasket sealer or gasket maker? Also, my axle housing gasket (2504) is made out of paper. Is this right? many thanks.
Thomas, Gasket sealer is fine. No gasket needed unless you need to shim out the pinion gear. The housing gasket should be soaked in water and patted dry with a cloth prior to installation. Use gasket sealer here also on both sides.
