When we bought the Model T there was a small packet on the steering column that held the registration papers for the former owners. There are 2 small springs that hook to the packet and that holds the papers in place. The front is clear and you can see the front of the papers through the plastic. The front is about 2" X 3" in size. Anyone out there know what that is called or where I might find another one? Thanks.

About halfway down the page on the MTFCA parts suppliers, there's a guy listed that sells leather versions with straps and buckles. I don't know if he's still out there, but it sounds like what you're talking about...

John
I've seen them at the parts stores. Don't know the name, they were made to attach to the steering post.

I use a ziplock freezer bag and keep it under the seat or in the trunk.

Mine's in the tool box. I've often thought of getting one of the leather carriers, or making one myself.

Folks are advised not to keep the real papers in them. You could keep fake ones but the nasty guys read the information, know you are not home, and give you a visit while you are out in your T having fun. They are a collection agency and they collect stuff from your garage and other places around your house. Keep the papers under the seat or in the tool box.

Frank,

We had a short (?) rash of that in a pretty nice neighborhood near where I live. He dirt bags would wait until someone went into a theater or nice restaurant and then break into their car stealing only the registration or insurance card so they would have the address of an empty house.

I really don't like thieves.

John Mays - Good question! In years past, it was common to see the type you're talking about with the springs. The type that our major "T" parts suppliers carry are good quality, except that they have a leather strap and buckle instead of the old original type with the springs. The spring type works much better in keeping the card holder tight on the steering column, but I have not been able to find this type either. If you find (or if anybody else knows of) a source for this spring type, please let us know.

Back when I was a wee tyke our 1941 Plymouth had one of those registration holders on the steering column, held in place by a couple of springs around the column. It was a legal requirement for the registration to be visible to a police officer looking in the window. Eventually it dawned on the legislature that the bad guys could see it too. Maybe it would be fun to use one with a fake address, like police headquarters or the local FBI office.

Really it would be best if you put in the name and address of the gun toting neo nazi skin head who is the meanest son-of-bob in the area. This also work great for your GPS home address.

I have one on my 14 Runabout. It says Woodrow Wilson. 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. Washington DC. Anyone under 40 would not know who or where that is. My first car a 1950 Plymouth had one on the steering column.

My '23 had those (aftermarket?) compartments on the rt. & lft. of the fuel tank. Pretty weather tight and that's where everything resided. One day Wifey came home with a set of sheets which came in heavy clear plastic zippered bags. The pillow case bag "stuck to my fingers" until I realised the black bible fitted into it perfectly with room for the reg. and such papers we need. Serendipity I guess. Nothing shows on my cars but the plates.
