Took apart a '27 axle run for about 2500 miles, overhauled in 2003 with new axles and needle thrust bearings. Has been in the shed since replacing with a Ruckstell in 2007. Overhaul used original Hyatt bearings and new sleeves.

Wanted to see what shape those modern needle thrusts looked like.

Bearing seemed good, but some wear now on the shoulder of the carrier

That thin bearing must find its spot and having a thin section, seems to be making a groove.

Other side the wear is hardly noticeable.

However, the axle shaft were also replaced then, and think maybe these shouldn't be run anymore.

2500 mile new axle below in pictures, good old used Ford above in my pile for comparison.

Seems like I should put the old axles back in?

The bearing would have more presure against it on the far side from the pinion as the gears would be trying to push away from each other.

Lower shaft is the newer one ?

I have those in my 24 Dan, Ken Swan gave me one set that he had run 40k and still looked like new. He changed them out before the Alaska trip in 02. I put one new set with them and have since added another 26k in my car. Regardless of what others think of these I am sold on their reliability and ease of set up. Have fun, KB

Jerry

The lower shaft in the photos is the new repro shaft, from 2003.

Has some rough surface now and worn edge from the Hyatt roller bearing.

I have used the needle roller thrust bearing, but only on the "loaded" side (behind the crown gear). On the other side I used the bronze washer. I wouldn't bother except in a high horsepower application.

I would get rid of the needle bearings and go to bronze washers. If that bearing fails no brakes and a destroyed ring and pinion. The needle bearing just adds unnecessary complexity to the rear end and makes failure more likely.
