I just put back together the differential of a T. Just the axles and the spider gears with no housings yet. When I pull the axles in and out I have slight end play in them. The fiber washer is in there. Is this normal??
Add some more fiber washer. It should turn, but not have side to side play.
When the fiber washer is installed and the inner housings are bolted tightly together you should be able to freely turn the axles inside the differential but you should have no end play. Fiber is not the best material to use between the axles and is almost always worn out. When you buy your gasket kit buy another washer seperate. In the last rear end I rebuilt one washer was perfect but sometimes they are thinner and two must be used. Just sand them until you get the correct fit.

A better choice is to put a ball bearing in instead of the fiber washers.
You may have trouble finding one the right size and it is a little tricky keep it in there while assembling. A little heavy grease or RTV will hold it.
One diff I pulled down had a brass disc in between the axles.
I have used a brass flat washer. I liked it.
Mine had a coin in it.

Thanks for the info, I will open it back up as I didn't think it should have any.
