I just bought a tool box, and want to get a luggage rack for mounting on the driver's side.
can anyone give tips and pictures for typical mounting on a 1924 Touring car? Any pitfalls that I should watch for? What should I look for in a luggage rack? I currently have an aluminum step plate mounted at the rear passenger door.

I'll post some pictures later, but for now I'll just counsel patience. Don't blow a lot of dough on the first luggage rack you see. Last year I bought one for $3. It needs a little straightening, but will be fine. I think the most I've paid for one was $15.

Here's what mine looks like on a 1924 Touring. I paid $15 for it, which was high, but the seller was a member of our club who was very ill and was trying to unload some stuff, so I just paid his asking price. There's nothing in the basket. I just put it there because I was tired of answering the question, "What's that on the running board?" Now they can see what it's for.

Hi Gerald,

Steve is right regarding price; $10-$15 seems to be "the going rate" for the common scissor type of luggage rack and perhaps $20 for a rather nice one. Do be aware that these racks came in different sizes for large and small cars. A large car rack would be too deep to fit the narrow running board on the model T.

Good luck with your search. Bill

I was very lucky to receive an "accordion rack" as a gift from a forum pal in absolutely gorgeous condition.

They're fairly easy to come by, though prices range from about $25, from sellers who don't realize what they've got, to a few hundred bucks, from sellers who think the racks are made of gold.

I saw what looked like a nice one last week, going for $60, which would be a low-ball price, for sure. Lemme search around a bit and see if I can find it again.

Okay, Gerald,

On e-bay alone, there's quite a collection of these racks and most are going for ridiculously low prices—and the shipping might cost more than the item in some cases. These web addresses look like a good place to start:

and here's a whole page full of 'em:

That would be convenient. I live 3 miles from there! I also have a 1927 Fordor that needs one.

I may be travelling up your way to visit my Parents in NEPA in a few weeks, after the O2O Renunion Tour in Meadville. I'll keep you posted.

Anyone else have pictures of toolbox mounting along with luggage racks? Is there enough room for both on the same side?

Gerald, the concertina type often have a foot which goes over the running board to stabilise the thing. This needs to be taken into account when mounting the toolbox. Rather than drilling the running board to bolt the toolbox on my roadster, I made a wooden board just a tad larger than the base of the box and bolted this in place with the two running board mounting bolts. Then I screwed the box to the wooden base. This lets you move the box further inboard than is possible when bolting it directly to the running board.

Hope this helps.

Allan from down under.

Gerold Roberts:

If you have a four door you will shut of at least one door with one of those dumb accordian type luggage racks that unfold side ways . Get your self the type of luggage rack that unfolds UP, UP, UP, not sideways. With a luggage rack that unfolds sideways, not only will you block one door on a four door T but the chances of someone else opening a door and putting big scratches in the paint on even a three door are high. With a luggage rack that unfolds UP the doors will clear over the top. Actually I find the luggage racks that unfold UP are cheaper to buy.
