Clever decoration, but what are they? I imagine that the shield behind the seat could give a clue if we could read it.
I believe the flags on the car are what are known as "Service Flag"
The "Service Flag" was first displayed in the front homes of windows during WWI to signify a son or husband serving in the Armed Forces. The flag quickly became known as the "Son in the Service flag" with each blue star indicating one family member. During WWII, the war department issued specifications on the manufacture of the flag as well as guidelines indicating when and by whom the Service Flag could be flown.
Thanks Dennis. No wonder that I didn't recognise them, AFAIK we had nothing like that in Oz.
They were also known as "Gold Star Flags", when the family member was killed in action. Dave
