Can someone post a picture or tell me how (where) to gap a X plug? Do you measure from the side or the tip of the electrode?? And what is the proper gap? I am using a set of "new" old style plugs. Thanks, Chip
I assume your electrode gap is on the side like this. Ford recommended a gap of "a thin dime", which is generally interpreted as .030" measured from the side of the center post.
Steve, that is just what looking for! Thanks so much....Chip
Many people find that just under .030 works a little better. I usually shoot for about .028, but not any less. The exception being if you're running an after-market mag like a Bosch DU4 without an impulse. The plugs then need to be about .018 to .022.
I personally prefer to use a pair of "long-nose" or "needle-nose" pliers to make adjustments on the early style plugs. I feel they are better at making fine bends without breaking the electrode.
Drive carefully, and enjoy, W2
I've always gapped them at .025" as per the instructions in the box wrapper. Never had one foul.
Be sure that you do not bend the center electrode or exert any pressure on it. A Champion spark plug gapping tool can be used to bend the side electrode to acieve the proper gap. Champion has made a dozen different tools, any auto part store should have at least one type available. This one is on eBay right now:
