Model T Ford Forum: Forum 2012: Anyone know this Coupe

I saw this 1924 Coupe at the Centennial celebration in Indiana in 2008. This is the early version of the Coupe that I've been looking for information on. I wasn't able to find the owner back then, but I'm hoping someone will recognize the car and be able to provide contact information. It appears that this early version is quite rare as this is the only one I've actually seen, and I only know of one other one.

Coupe

Thanks,
Dave S.

I'm fairly sure it's actually a one off. History tells us that all 24 Coupes were black, so this was probably a special order for a circus owner or somethin' like that.

A couple of years ago on the forum, I saw a black and white picture taken in Australia or New Zealand in the 1920's, featuring a long procession of closed bodied Model T's whereby all of the Model T's pictured had two toned paint above and below the body belt. That is, the color above the body belt was different than the color below. I remember thinking how good it looked and wished I could see the color combination. I have never seen a two tone body anywhere else.

Could these cars be somewhere down under and, am I wrong in my observation that the two cars pictured appear to be RHD including the red one in the background? Jim Patrick

Dave, i don't remember the persons name but they were on the CO/WY tour in 2009, Dave Huson or Robert Ducharme may be able to help, he was on the trouble trailer going into Winter Park, he had a cracked distributor cap.

Rick

Jim,
Two tone is more likely to be an Australian feature rather than NZ. Australia built their own bodies but NZ cars came complete (albeit semi dismantled) from Canada (but complete with paint):-).

I found the photo I was referring to of the 2 toned Model T. I remembered it as having more than one Model T but I guess I was mistaken, but there are plenty of 2 toned limosines. I still like the little T best.

If you want to see the thread and the many postings, it is from 2009 and is entitled, "Period Photo - New in 27".

The photo is of a motorcade of dignitaries heading to the Governor General's residence in Wellington, New Zealand. He must have had one big estate! Jim Patrick.

Boy I bet the purists dont like seeing a two-toned T! Especially in the black era! Looks good to me as I am a 95% type, not 100%!

Dave Huson,

Thanks for the info. I'll try to contact him and see if that is really him.

The two-tone paint is obviously not original. Doesn't matter to me. I'm more interested in the construction details of the body.

This photo was taken in entrance to the Governor General's formal residence. I suppose the US equivalent is the White House. The photo looks north with Dufferin Street in the background. The number plates on the cars are white letters on a black plate with a centre hyphen which dates the photo as 1926-1927.

I wish the procession of cars in New Zealand was in color so I could see the color combination of the T. I really like the way it is painted a dark color from the body belt, up and a lighter color below the body belt with a third color used on the fenders.

I'll bet it was pretty and I may paint my '26 Fordor like that, if I can come up with a really impressive color combination, such as maroon from the body belt, up and a cream or light beige color below the body belt, with red pinstriping just below the body belt and down the windshield post and with black fenders. I could call it a LHD Down Under Model T, imported from the states and painted in Australia. Opinions? Ideas? :-)

Maybe I'm just dreaming out loud, but when I really like something, I usually regret it if I don't follow through with it. Jim Patrick

Jim Patrick:

That would be great, but I would want the lighter color on top and the darker color down below.

Thank you for your input Dave. In the photos above, it appears that virtually every 2 toned car has the darker color on top so that would seem to be more indicative of the way a 2 toned car appeared back in the day. What colors would you recommend? Jim Patrick

Jim Patrick:

I see nothing wrong with the coupe above. I would have to think long and hard on which color, but I do like the coupe. I had a friend paint his 26 touring black cherry and I like it so much I painted my montana 500 car the same color. I had metal flakes in it but not one of the originality fanatics said a thing. Maybe none of them were at any of the races.
