I just spoke with Grady this morning. He still has his T and was going to start it this spring, however the old gas caused him some problems. He said no one he is aware of has a T nearby to help get his going.

Grady said there was a car meet in Fredericksburg recently but he didn't attend, but wishes he had.

Grady also said he still reads the forum on occasion but has not posted for some time.

He said he is still interested in Model Ts and may get on the forum again at some point.

I was prompted to call Grady after hearing of the loss John B. on the forum. It was great speaking with Grady, and he said I could post his email if anyone would like to send him an email. The address is jpuryear@(remove spam)wild blue.net.

Thanks for that Rob. Good to hear Grady is still with us. I had been wondering since he hasn't posted in a while. Dave

Thank you, Rob, for this effort. I keep wondering about so many of our old forum friends. I wonder if they simply dropped off from the "sign on" issues, or if they got tired of OTs and drift and left. I do wish that they would come back either way. (I, personally, do like a lot of the OT as long as it does not get vitriolic.) I do want the forum to continue to be mostly model T related, but the OT (especially tractors, trains, old phonographs and music, movies, etc) helps so much to just keep up with distant friends.
It is wonderful to hear that Grady is well!
Drive carefully, and enjoy, W2

Maybe with his oodles of spare time and energy, Chris could create a list of missing personalities that we could edit?

Example:

Berch, John; Iowa: 16 May 12, R.I.P.

Key, Billy; Wirelake, NM: 30Apr12, busy

Puryear, Grady; Tx: 26May12, OK

I sent Grady an email after phoning him. I always enjoyed his posts, and his message reminds me why.

Grady's email:

Thanks ever so much for the telephone call, it really meant
a lot to me to hear from someone after all this time and to
know that one has not been forgotten by everyone.

I tried to log on to the Model T site, and for reason cannot,
so Tuesday AM I will call Headquarters and see what is up.

I am spending a very quiet weekend at home, as usual, and
remembering all those who are no longer with us.  Our local
club, Ex Military Flyer's, almost disbanded last year, we were
down to less than a dozen members, all had passed on, but
elected to keep our doors open for awhile. We now have more
members due to the spate of small Wars of late, so perhaps we
will survive a bit longer.

I am in the process of writing my Family History for mainly my
Grandchildren and soon to be Great Grandchildren.  I am the
only member left of both sides of my family, and if I don't do
it, it will never get done, and there is no one left to do it.

You said your family was in Nebraska in 1880, my ancestors were
here in what was then Spain in 1797, quite a history for them,
nothing spectacular, they just lived their lives as it were, but
they were my family, and I love them.

I have made it a point to mark many of the graves that I know of
that were never marked, still one of the main ones to go, my
great great grandfather who was a Pioneer Doctor, not sure
that I will get it done, but will give it a try anyway, several were
killed by Indians, some in this immediate area.

I would so like to drive my car again, I really miss running the
back roads, perhaps I can prevail on one of my younger neighbors
who is an Aircraft mechanic, to help me get it started.

I bought the rear brake kit some time back from the man up in
Colorado, and would like to get it installed before driving it again,
the traffic has really increased the last several years.

Thank you again, and I will try to get my act together and start
posting once more.

Your friend - Grady Puryear

Rob, You said Grady didn't know of anyone in the Fredericksburg area to help him with his T. I am surprised that he doesn't know Julius and Marvin Neunhoffer, two of the most knowledgeable T men in Texas in Kerrville, the next town south of Fredericksburg. Their phone, 830-257-8168, unless it has changed.

Terry,

I suspect Grady is the type of person not to ask for help for fear of being a burden (just my theory). Also, it appears Grady has been involved with a lot of activities and probably has a lot of different interests. He did tell me that the person he used to have help him with his T is no longer available.

Maybe a call or email to the Nuenhoffers might get Grady going in his T again. He did say that he isn't able to bend much to work on his T, so a little help and encouragement might go a long way.

Rob

Terry,

I see you are close to Houston. Grady mentioned he has a son who lives near Houston, but doesn't return home often and has no interest in the T.

Rob, The Nuenhoffers are in the T parts and restoration business, so they might expect to be paid for their services, especially if they are making a "house call". Grady did tell me that he had a son in the Houston area and that he had no interest in his T. Grady offered to sell the T to me, a year or two ago. I'd love to have taken it off his hands, but I've got four T's, two of which I need to sell as indoor storage is bankrupting me.

Mike W., I do not have Grady's number. You could probably get it from Fredericksburg information or Rob Heyen.

Rob thanks for doing this. I think of Grady often and have been wondering.

I found Grady's number in the white pages in Fredericksburg.

Barbara, I sent Grady an email with your number. Hopefully he will call next week and get back. It sounded like he would enjoy being back in touch on the forum.

Dexter, I've been meaning to find out what happened to Grady since last spring when someone had a post asking what had happened to him. I've thought about John Berch and the many times I planned on stopping by his place but didn't.

Rob

Another email from Grady. Sounds like several of us have sent him emails:

Hi Rob,

I will never cease to be amazed, you wouldn't believe how many
emails I have gotten, I will make an honest effort to do better in
the future on posting.  Attached is the email I mentioned to you,
since you are in the Insurance business, you will recognize some
of these I am sure - Regards, Grady Puryear

Like Rob, I thought many times about stopping to see John on one of my trips through Iowa, and never did. Thinking of that yesterday when I was in Winfield, I phoned some old friends I hadn't seen in ages even though they live just seven miles from me. They were home and receiving callers, so on the way home I stopped at their place for the first time in the present century. We had a wonderful visit, and I was invited back last night for dinner. So last night we had another wonderful visit, and I got to meet some interesting people who were there. I know they were interesting because they listened to me talk about myself. The point of this little story is that if there's a dear old friend we haven't seen for years, if we haven't been to a family reunion since the cousin who just graduated from high school was a toddler, all because of being "too busy", we need to think about that. Not many people come to the end and think, "I should have spent more time at work and less with my family." I think that goes for friends, too.
