Hi everyone,

I'm working on an NH that I'm making good, and the "bible" says to get the gap between the top of the float to the machined flange to between 15/64" to 1/4" to set the float height. Which part of the machined flange do you think I measure to ? Or am I getting a bit carried away here...

NH1

NH2

Regards,
Bede

Bede,
from Dykes.....re; the "NH"
When measuring at a point opposite to the float hinge, the distance from the flange, on which the gasket fits, to the float should be 1/4" to 5/16" when the float valve is closed.
(For metal floats, the distance should be 3/16" to 1/4".)
Hope this helps,
Rob

Should add, to me that sounds like your top picture measuring point.

You will need to make yourself a gauge as shown below and measure the gap on the side opposite the hinge. Jim Patrick

PS. It must be measured from the machined flange where the bowl ring gasket goes. As shown in the above Ford diagram with a hollow metal float, the 15/64" measurement applies to all floats on an NH. Jim Patrick

Thanks guys, so the correct spot to measure to is to 'where the gasket sits against'. Thanks again, regards, bede

Yes. Just like in your top-most picture. Jim Patrick

Is this the most likely cause of a leaking carb?

No, the leaking fuel is most likely a sunk float and/or bad shut off valve.

There is a perfect picture of what to do in the Ford Service book. I made my gauge out of heavy paper as recommended above, and by the way the measurement is made with the carburetor upside down, not as pictured above.

I just set it so it sits parallel with the flange. Works fine.

I set mine by eye like Jerry indicates. They work fine.
