After a pleasant breakfast with the "Half Fast" car club I pulled in nose first facing the front of the barber shop and went in for a trim. Of course the coupe was the subject of conversation and center of attention the whole time I was inside so as I was leaving I decided to show off a bit and proceeded to hand crank to the delight of the old codgers inside...needless to say despite having done this successfully several times recently [alone in my garage], she wouldn't so much as acknowledge my existence! After the third mighty pull I felt a twinge in my back, stuck my head back inside and said I was going to plan B! I left them all laughing and of course she fired right up and I at least managed to back out skilfully and pull out smoothly. Oh well, a car full of cute young girls waved and took cell phone pictures as I headed home so my head regained its normal size and the back is OK too!!

I've noticed that somehow the number of eyes focused on the car has a direct effect on starting. Some law of physics I guess.
At least the cute girls waving always make everything right again.

Once on this forum, many years ago, a guy said he was going to show off his hand cranking when they were all leaving a car show.
He said every time he turned the ignition on it gave him a 'free start'.
after several times everyone just walked away.

John,
I, too, drove my centerdoor into town late last week to get a haircut. As we were waiting our turn (1 chair shop) one old man asked me if I was a woodworker as he pointed out a clock housing and stand he made and gave to the barber. I answered that, no, I wasn't. Rather I enjoyed metal working and mechanics and that '19 centerdoor outside was my most recent restoration. Thats when the Model T became the main attraction and topic of conversation to the old geezers. A little while later the 'woodworker' finished his haircut and left the shop. Immediately returning he asked the esteemed assemblage if we'd seen the old Ford outside. . . . Oh well, guess thats something I can soon look forward to also

Sonny, What do you mean by the words "I can soon look forward to"??

I think he means getting increasingly forgetful. Apparently the old fellow had already forgotten about or missed out on the discussion about the T!!

John,

The trick is you let one of the onlookers give it a swing! That way if stubborn you don't look d'uh. :-) Nice part about onlookers and a stem winder is if it does balk, usually get them all to lean into it from behind and in the first 5-10 ft a popped clutch usually always works. :-) Group participation activity.

Son shared one with me. He learned to start and drive a T at about 8 and is 29 now. He was at a concours type car show last weekend, octagenarian in a beautiful old Stutz at the show. Time to go only way to start was a 'spin' and the car was balking. Guy near fell over the son says from pulling through so many times. Guy says he'll rest, even if it takes him 'til evening. Various guys offered a 'pull through' but the guy said 'if you never cranked before you're not learning on this one!'

The son smiles and steps up, says he's been starting T's since 8 and stem winder at that. Guy smiles, says...go for it kid!

Son said, took him a quarter pull done just right...car purred like a kitten! Made his day, but he later did have comments about what you got for your extra money in the day
