I have a 1926 Model T Coupe and very little knowledge about the vehicle. My problem is, when I shift from low to high 80% of the time the vehicle chatter very badly. Once in high it runs O.K. I would appreciate any words of wisdom.
Let off the throttle when you upshift.
Retarding the spark may help as well.
Pull the inspection plate from the hogs head, check the clutch fingers are all adjusted even in other words contacting the three studs through the driven plate at the same time. I forgot the proper adjustment but it will make a bad chatter low to high if its wrong. 11/16" rings a bell!
It's 13/16" of an inch, but you were close...

I'm with Royce on this one, Reducing the throttle on change makes a world of difference, l look at it this way, driving a manual modern car, you wouldn't leave your foot hard on the gas pedal when changing from second to third, on flat ground you shouldn't need to move the spark advance, but on an incline by all means reduce that a little too.
What linings are you using ??
David:
Type of linings wouldn't enter the picture since he his complaining of shift into direct drive, not engaging low speed.
Check the direct drive clutch bolt adjustment on the cross shaft cam. Minimal movement needed to engage or disengage direct drive clutch.
Retarding the spark makes sense, since the engine rpm's are being reduced to a little less than half on the shift to direct drive.

More than that, Bob, it's 2.75 to one.
