Just wondering about recent insurance experience. I dropped my former company due to management changes which eliminated both real customer service and cut way back on driveablity. They basically tried to "arrange" a cancellation so that new and far more restrictive terms could be inserted in a new application NIce going for a 14 year customer! If we cant use them, then young folks wont be able to learn and our fun will be greatly reduced. Any recommendations for the best company(s). Andy

We couldn't find any of the regular antique vehicle insurance companies that would allow a 16 year old to drive AND allow me to carry anything in the back of my TT. Seems like one of them would allow a 16 year old to drive if I was in there with him, but not allow me to go to the lumber yard. Others didn't say I couldn't haul, but wanted all drivers to be 25 and said they MAY make an exception when he was 18 IF I were to be in there with him. So, we insured them with State Farm. Their only deal is that I don't go over 7000 miles in a year. Costs more, but was worth it to me. He even took it to school one day to show History class. Couldn't do that with Taylor. He is now 20, out of the house and seldom drives them any more. I may look into one of the antique vehicle insurance companies now.

I quit Taylor years ago. Try Hagerty, very hobby friendly.

Hagerty is the one who said I couldn't take my TT to the lumber yard.

Well, I guess I could see them doing that. They just don't see a trip to the lumber yard as "pleasure driving". I do however!

What's Grundy say??

I was all set to go with Hagerty when they said I could not bring firewood home from my wood lot 7/10 miles from my house in my '71 pu I backed out. I am with American Modern Home. $400 for a 25 T, 29 A, 58 Healey and 71 Chev 4x4 pu. Also said I could not haul my T on a trailer behind the pu to shows or meets.

Bill,

To be clear, are you saying that they didn't want you using the PU as a tow vehicle but they had no problem with the T being towed?

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By Bill Alexander in Albion, Maine on Wednesday, May 30, 2012 - 02:29 pm:

The T being towed never came up even tho' I mentioned that that I wanted to do that with the pu. As soon as they said I could not haul firewood ANY distance, it was all over as far as Hagerty getting my policy.

I use State farm, there are a number of reasons why. First I have an umbrella policy with them and the T is under that umbrella, if I used a different carrier it was not covered in ALL situations. Second, I live in Minnesota and do not drive the T in the winter, so I change my coverage to “storage” and it costs me about $7 for 6 months. Third, I like to drive my T and State Farm did not care, as long as I stayed under 7000 miles yearly (and how are they going to verify that). They stated if I chose to do a long cross country tour and would have over 7000 miles they would still cover me. I can tow it, drive it, however I wish, and I can let anyone drive it, with no penalties.

The only down fall, is my every 6 month bill is more than the specialty insurance curriers (6 month compared to 6 month), but I can drop the coverage down for the winter and then it is way cheaper, and I am still fully covered.

Nice part with State Farm, I get a lot of discounts, including a discount on the T (actually on all my vehicles) one for having a car alarm on my truck.

I have a question. Is the coverage with State Farm for a certain amount or will they just give you Blue book for the T? Thanks, Dan.

Grundy turned me down for insurance on one of my cars because - according to them - the pictures showed that it was less than 80% restored.

I use JC Taylor and have collected on several claims from them over the last 20 + years. They have every feature I want in collector car insurance including excellent customer service.

My State Farm is 'Agreed Value", but you need to make sure your agent understands what you want. Mine didn't get it right the first time, but we got it straightened out.

Dan,
I have my cars insured with State Farm and on T's it for an actual dollar figure. Had to send in pictures. They have ask on a couple of cars as to how I arrived at the value but I haven't had any issue with that.

I use State Farm for a lot of the reasons Jason mentioned. Whenever I've added a new T I've had it appraised by a local auto appraiser. He thought my touring was worth more than I thought it was, and he appraised the Fordor for less than I guessed it was worth. I suppose on average we agree.

Frankly,
most classic car insurances have more in common than one would prima facie think. Mileage restriction? Sure. Not a huge problem without an odometer, or is it? Not for driving to and from work? Sure. But you can test drive your car even at 7:45 in the morning before heading to work or when taking the day off to make sure everything works as intended, can you? The point is, unless your TT reads "Billy Bob's Lumber" on the doors and you get in an accident with a small forest loaded, you'll be covered. Unlike regular insurance companies who are predatory by default, classic car insurances understand that 99% of us love our cars and drive them accordingly. Hence the difference in premiums for a T-bucket versus a regular T, despite the inferior brakes of the latter. I'm with JC for many years and all they ever wanted is a photo. When I added the T I even honestly stated that it has increased horsepower as the Ricardo head probably adds another horse or so. "That's okay," they said. I have that in writing.

I have Hagerty. They are the only Classic car insurer that will insure for timed events. Taylor and Grundy won't insure you if you run a timed speedster run, even if the time you are shooting for is unknown. I am 28 and I had my first Model T when I was 17. Hagerty will only insure people 25 years old and older. Prior to that I used Std auto insurance and paid through the nose. Good luck, I am very happy with Hagerty!!

So is State Farm the only company that will allow under 25 drivers?
My son is turning 16 this fall and I want him to be able to drive all of my classics. (pending his knowledge, practice, and show of responsibility, of course!)

Mine is just added to my American Family Insurance plan. I have several collector cars, all with "stated value". I tell them the amount I want them insured for. Never asked for a picture, no restrictions of any kind, drive whenever, wherever, whoever.

If JC Taylor is allowing 16 year olds to drive, it is something new. I spoke with the owner at Hershey 3-4 years ago about this subject and was told no. He said at 18, if he had a good driving record, they might consider it, if I were in the car with him, but not at 16 because he didn't have enough experience.

I have JC Taylor now. Teenager's aren't covered.
