I am building a 1912 Colorado Leather License Plate. I have the large brass numbers for the center but need smaller year of manufacture numbers. I had the information for the smaller brass numbers about 1 1/2" high but have looked and looked and can not find them. Can anyone point me in the right direction for obtaining small year of manufacture numbers.

Leather pre-states typically did not have the year listed on the plate, only the registration numbers.

Prior to 1913, municipalities controlled automobile registration in Colorado and not all municipalities required it.

Therefore, if you are a purist, the design of your pre-state plate (such as the height of the numbers and where and how the plate is to be displayed on the automobile) would be dictated by the laws of the respective municipality. For example, if your intention is to create a Berthoud plate, you would need look up the registration ordinance that was in existence for 1912 in Berthoud.

If Berthoud had no registration requirement in 1912, then there is no such thing as a Berthoud pre-state plate.

Hope this makes sense.

thanks for the information. I am really not trying to duplicate what Berthoud had in 1912. Berthoud was and still is a small town, I doubt they had anything.

Steve Hammatt in Washington has a business making reproduction leather plates. I've seen them and they are beautiful. Check out the interview he did with Jay Leno that's on Leno's web site. Maybe Steve can help you out.

Thanks, I think maybe I talked with him at Chickasha. I notice in the interview that he did not have any brass yom numbers and I would like brass numbers. In fact I did not even see any small yom numbers.

Notice the original yom plates on my 16, in fact I have yom plates on all my cars.

Quick search of the net found some small brass numerals, but alas, the site says limited qty, and there is no '9' available. :-(

Thanks for the tip. I was just sitting hear looking through the Lee Valley Catalog. Boy that would be a good catalog for someone building a depot hack or fixing a lot of things that needed a new lock like running board tool boxes or turtle decks. I could not find anything like small brass numbers. I think I will give them a call.
PS I wonder if they have any '6' available

The numbers are 1 3/16" high.

Yep, get a 6 and turn it upside down!

From that webpage:

Sheared from solid 1/16" brass, these numbers and letters are 30mm high (1-3/16") and are fully polished on one side.

Though supplied with escutcheon pins, they are suitable for attachment using small round-head screws, or can be easily countersunk for flat-head screws.

These products have been discontinued. Limited stock. Some characters are no longer available.
