Going to a local cruise night nine miles away. Starving for fuel, we were forced to stop twice to clean the sediment bowl, fuel line and float bowl. Eventually we got the T to be able to pull the 6% grade with no trouble. Sure beat the 4 mph we were doing before we got it off the road at a safe spot. We were in the right lane about a quarter miles from the destination and we need to get over three lanes of heavy up grade traffic and guess what, starts starving again! Alex nursed the T to our destination and we had a great time. After we ate dinner cooked on the T's manifold, Alex gave the fuel system another going through at the car show. The ride home over the same route was smooth and uneventful. A friend of ours followed us home in his 62 Jag, just in case.

As it turns out, Alex discovered that the seat foam is falling apart and somehow winding up in the fuel tank, maybe through the fuel cap vent.

First Stop:

Second Stop

Dinner!

Paul,
I assume that's you under the car and Alex catching some sun in the second picture? Glad you're safe and that the problem is diagnosed!

Sorry, Alex is under the car, Alex's girl friend in in the back and I supervised by drinking Pepsi, making obnoxious comments and taking pictures.

Good to see you had the fire extinguisher nearby...

I think the source of the problem is that new-fangled electrical thingy on the engine. So was Alex's girlfriend sitting there trying to get someone to stop and assist??
:-)
Sounds like a great day. I, OTOH weed-eated and worked on the wiper switch on the new-fangled car--and didn't get if fixed--bunch of @#@@!~! electronic parts on the switch (probably the delay feature). And now I have to go to work. Bleah!!

Nice wheel chalk, glad you didn't need the fire extinguisher in a hurry. Looks good even with you under the car. I had that problem years ago and put a filter in the tank so it catches anything that tries to get in the fuel line. That was before they were available at the parts suppliers, works great.

Well, we do have a wheel chock but it wasn't doing us much use sitting at home in the driveway. Besides we all know that the single tool, part, gizmo or thingie you need most for road side repairs will be the one thing you fail to bring with you. Don't worry, the extinguisher wasn't under tension and real easy to grab...

As far as that alternator goes? Well let's just say neither one of us has had to put the charger on the battery since it was put on and I do believe Alex runs headlights even during the day time. I wish I could find one for our 29 Packard and if I ever get my own T, you can bet it will have one too. :-)

Hey Carl, we were on Sand Canyon Road and it's not a good place room wise to be stopping with "difficulties". Kielbasa & beans since you asked.

What I do to keep the stuff getting in the gas tank, is I have a small feather duster tucked down between the seat riser and the body panel, which I take a good dusting of the top of the tank and the cap before I remove the cap to gas up the car. All kinds of dust and dirt get down there as well as hair and upholstery materials from the seat.

Paul, I used to hear that those alternators got very hot, any problems like that with yours? is it 12V or 6V?

I've always run alternators, but they're not the best compromise. I drilled as many cooling holes in mine as I could, which helped reliability some. I have several unconverted spares I bought cheap.

If you're going to use an alt, my rec is to mount it so you can drive it with the fan belt, so it will get enough rpm to help, and will have its own original cooling fan.

Oh, we ran three Greatraces of about 4,000 miles in 14 days, and never a failure on the race, but shortly after..

Thanks Ricks! I was thinking about a fan driven type, I have one on my Model A, and of course it is fan belt driven originally, so it works great. It has a special pully on it to drive it faster. Might use the same type set-up on my T Truck.

Here is what somebody posted:

I bought a 12v VW bug alt that I could drive the waterpump off the back, but that's as far as it got.
