hey guys. well today i got the engine out of the T, the crank case and bottom of he engine off, and the transmission cover is already off. I am having troubl egetting the crank shaft to rotate to get to the other bolts off of the flywheel, despite the engine looking great inside (just really dirty is all). The gears can wiggle around, but it won't crank over. I think there may be something wrong with the actual crank on the front of the engine itself. There's the big circle, with the smaller circle that has the bar going through it that the teeth of the crtank should catch on. Both ends of this little bar protruding DO NOT enter the little holes on either side of the large circle. Should they in order to get the engine to turn? Any help as soon as possible would be great: the sun is starting to set.

Can you post a picture so we get a better idea, that way we're all on the same page.

have you taken the timing cover off the front of the engine yet ??

I wish I could, but my camera was left up at college (stupid of me, I hope security finds it before somebody nabs it). Still, all in all today was great. The engine looks to be in great condition: just filthy at the bottom of the pistons in that depression part of them (blasted it w/ some WD40, may hit those gears with penetrating oil too and see if that frees up the crank).

Timing cover? This may sound stupid, but is that the round almost half sphere pice that covers where the crank connects?

The starting crank should be removed before you remove the crankcase. When you state the crankcase is removed, do you mean the long part which goes from under the front pulley all the way to the back of the transmission? Or do you mean the inspection cover under the engine itself? The entire unit all the way from the front of the engine to the rear of the transmission is the crankcase, and if it is removed the crank in front of the engine has to be removed. So in that case, you should be able to turn the flywheel by hand to turn the engine over, unless something is holding it such as a broken crankshaft, or locked timing gear.

Normans right in his posting above, the timing gear cover is located directly behind the crank handle and lower belt pulley, its bolted to the front of the engine block and yes it has a half moon where the crankshaft goes thru it.
If you havent already done it pull the crank handle off/out and start you pull down. ( if the engines already out of the chassis/car.
Take the head off, turn the block on its top ( on a suitable protective board){ make sure the valves dont hit the floor, a 12" block of wood at either end of the block will cure that } and pull the crankcase off the bottom of the engine.
You should as Norman says, be able to see and turn the crank by hand.
Is that long bar you are talking about .....the camshaft ??? or the internal oil feed tube ??

Here is one we "Prepared Earlier", this will show you what you're looking at.

With the pan removed , this is what you'll see.

Your crankshaft will be completely visible.

As will be your timing gears and camshaft.

Hope these help so you can identify your stuck part.

Hey guys, I removed that crescent moon piece that was covering the crank shaft. The whole crank case is off: not just the inspection plate. I was amazed at how nice my cam looks, as well as the crank shaft: stil lhas the keys to prtect from torsion on it, and all are shiny and bright. I'll have to try rotating the flywheel itself tomorrow: that means i'll have to stand it on end. Right now it's upside down with the top of the pistons/uncovered manifold area on a towel on the garage floor. There is also the possibility that there's a damned pebble or something blocking one of the gears in front. I'll have to get back to you guys on this: works done for today. Thanks for all of the quick responses.

At that angle you could have an extended valve resting on its edge on the floor. That stuck valve could be stopping the cam from rotating, the cam is geared to the crankshaft.

Place 4 cylinder head bolts back in the top of the block, and roll it back on its piston side, the bolts will support the block up in the air so the valves can go up and down as the crank turns.
