Model T Ford Forum: Forum 2012: Holley "G" leaking gas

I installed my "G" and turned on the gas today and gas poured out of the hole in the bottom. I removed the bowl and set the float a little lower and it still comes out of the hole. Am I correct in assuming the float is still set wrong allowing the gas level in the bowl to be too high, or did I miss something critical when rebuilding it?

The hole in the bottom is the overflow drain. Set the float so that it is parallel to the carb body and try it again. I read somewhere that there should be a 1/2 gap between the machined flange and the float in the Holley G but, I am not certain that this is correct.

Just to make sure, take the bowl off and have someone turn on the gas as you move the float up and down. Make sure that when it's up, it actually shuts off the gas, and it doesn't have a "hitch" in its movement. If it works correctly as a valve, then you can attack the adjustment issue.

First thing in the morning I'll remove the bowl and see if the gas stops when manually holding up the float. If it stops I'll continue adjusting the float. If it continues to run I'll remove it and put on an NH till I can go back through it. That all brass "G" sure looks good on there--but, not if it don't work.

Holley G's can be a bit finicky regarding float adjustment as it does not set by height but by the amount of fuel in the "puddle"

Mike -- Don't give up on it too quickly. The Holley G is a good carb. It is unusual to find one which does not leak; they all need to have the float needle and seat replaced. After doing that, I set the float parallel with the carb body as mentioned above. It has always worked for me. BTW, someone recently began reproducing the needle/seat for the G. I'm pretty sure it's RV Anderson.

I went through it and put what I thought was a new needle and seat, new strangling tube, and what appeared to be a new jet. The idling pickup tube was not even kinked. The body was worn badly enough that I made a bushing for the throttle shaft to go into. I took the bowl off today and and the gas would stop when manually working the float. Put it back on and it still poured gas from the vent. With the bowl on and the carb off the car I couldn't hear the float flop as I inverted the carb. The new float appeared to be rubbing the bowl. I shaved a little off the edge of it and could hear it work. Reinstalled it and no leaks. Pulled the car off and got it started and adjusted the carb and drove it down the road. I believe the float was too low because it seemed to lack fuel at speed. Only went a couple of miles and when I got back to the shop ready to stop, it died. Had massive oil leak from hogs head--went to lunch while everything cooled down. After lunch, I took the G off and replaced with the NH I built as a backup. Oil leak was stupidity! When assembling the motor, trans and hogshead on the engine stand and doing the initial adjusting of the bands, I had barely put the plate on the hogshead just to keep anything from falling in the trans while I continued the build--no gasket and not even fingertight screws.
Easy fix! Pulled it off again, adjusted the NH and went a couple miles down the road and back--ran great so I drove it back onto the lift and went back to installing fenders, etc. Looks like I'm going to get it done in time to take to Petit Jean! Hope to finish assembly tomorrow so I can drive it around a couple of days to get the bugs out before I haul it a thousand miles to drive it for a week at the mountain
