Model T Ford Forum: Forum 2012: Brake Lever Adjustment Question

I do not have neutral when my brake lever is vertical, I know that the cam is not making contact with the clutch lever bolt when my brake handle is vertical, so I know that I have to adjust this to move the clutch lever bolt when I put the brake lever in this position, can someone please explain this drawing for me? I have two specific questions:

1. What does it mean to adjust the yoke so that it has 1/16 of an inch play in the direction shown? I may be missing something but I do not see a direction indicated in the drawing. I do see that there is play between the top of the pin and the top of the yoke - is that what is intended here?

2. It says to set the control shaft forward until cam clears clutch lever bolt. How do you set the control shaft forward? Is the position of the cam adjustable, if not is the shaft adjustable?

The control lever is the same as the parking brake handle. It means to put it all the way forward when making the adjustments. The low pedal should be all the way back toward the seat in the high gear position. All cars are not exactly equal. Somewhere between the forward position of the parking brake lever and the position where the parking brake is applied there should be a neutral, where the transmission is in neutral and the brake is off. The only adjustment of the clutch lever to the control lever would be by bending the cross shaft. I have had a car where it was bent and I had to straighten it out to make it work.

You will notice that in the drawing, right above the words Adjust the yoke to have 1/16" play there is a picture of the relationship between the clutch lever and the clevis. The clevis is 1/16" short of the pin fitting into it when correctly adjusted. When you push the clutch lever forward slightly, you can install the pin.

Thanks very much Norman. Your explanation made it very clear for me.
